  1. @ToneLoc They sure are! Now we’ll just sit back and wait for the ALLCAPS-FAKENEWS people talk about how it’s not the station it used to be…. Of course it’s not, times have changed and the industry isn’t what it used to be… Get over it!

  2. Tone – Ron

I am happy that NW is doing well, I wish the same for most in this area .

Having said that, when on a scale between 1 – 10 with 10 being the best and NW is say ‘ A 4 in a Sea of 2’s and 3’s it does not mean much to be number 1 .

    Think about that .

  3. Good numbers for NW & CBC. When are they gonna pull the plug on Bloomberg, Sportsnet and AM730? Doesn’t seem worth keeping those trash fires alive.

  4. NW’s challenge is still age; they’re #7 25-54. I’m not sure there’s much, programming-wise, that can be done to fix this, especially if they stay on AM.

The trick will be to train sales-people, agencies, and advertisers that the 55-70 demographic is far more active and open to new brands than they’ve even been. They’re worth advertising to — probably far more than to those in the 18-24 demo that also fall short of the outdated “25-54” silo.

  5. I am waiting for when The Peak does something different. I have said for a very long time that they should flip then name to The Zone (like Victoria) and instead of Crash and Mars in the evenings they should have Dylan and Jason, and even possibly Pol and Jenny on there as well. The Zone has great personalities and the name The Peak is a little redundant now. Many years of struggling ratings has turned many people off. Most people I know in the Vancouver area listen to CFOX or they listen to The Zone if they can get the signal. I live in the Toronto area but am originally from
Vancouver and I prefer The Zone over The Peak with the exception of Tyler and Lynch.

Geoff: I do agree that the bottom 3 stations should change but really what will you change 3 AM stations to? There are not to many options except a possible CISL resurrection and maybe a competing talk station to CKNW. I still personally think a talk format geared towards men would work. The couple that have been around before didn’t last because Corus tried to tweak the formats and do it for cheap.
I would try and edgy talk format, using a similar format to how Joe Rogan does his show, or even a show similar to Jason Ellis on SiriusXM.

  6. Amazing lg 104.3 the breeze didnt change formats yet. But I figure that it will change soon to a hip hop station retro or otherwise or a south asian music channel with english announcements and advertising or a retro alternative rock station.channe

  7. I have read all of the suggestions here with interest then looked closer at ratings results in more detail, it now makes me wonder how some of the stations survive, and actually manage to make a profit .

Then I consider my own listening preferences and realize that when in the car I now listen to SXM at least 50% of the time, some days more only turning to NW for Bruce who I once agreed with 90% of the time, Michael Campbell, Roy Green, a bit of Smyth, more Jill Bennett, with no Lynda Simi, or Adler, Adler seems to me to be pompous, full of self importance, and on top of that he appears to have had “Political Re-Assignment Surgery” sometime over the past few years .

I do not listen to NW anywhere near as much as I once did but I also must admit I have abandoned FM almost totally, something only say 2 years ago I would have never thought possible .

It all makes me wonder, has radio changed or has a larger percentage of the listening audience changed ?

Needless to say it is a very tough business and it will not get any easier, I wish them all much luck .

  8. Subject: Radio in Vancouver

How is possible that in this time period, local stations like CKNW continue to spew out nothing but news of America? Ok, it holds listeners. We should come to our senses and our roots to realize we have enough problems in Canada. we don’t need a Canadian so-caled 50,000 watt radio station telling us about a country which has over 100 more years of history, more diversification, a lot more educated people, sometimes, and really beat out Canada to the punch every time Sylvester is thrown into the ring!!!

  9. Replying to Don.
Don, nobody advertises to old people. Never have. Never will.
Old people don’t have babies. They don’t buy baby clothes. They don’t buy a house with another bedroom for the kids. They don’t buy lawn mowers for kid’s back yard, they don’t buy back to school clothes. The don’t fly to Disney Land with the kids. They don’t build a garage or buy a 2nd car to drive the kids around to activities – in sports equipment – which they don’t buy. They don’t splurge on a ski weekend in Whistler for the family. They don’t buy a bigger house when the kids are in their teens, they don’t renovate their basement so the noisy brats can hide out down there.
Old people prefer their 8 year old computer and 9 year old TV. They’re never going to buy a another new cell phone. Old people don’t buy new cloths, they wear the same comfortable pants all week.
Nobody advertises to old people. Never have. Never will.
    I know why.
    Because I’m an old person.

  10. Geoff/Brian: A hybrid talk/music format geared to a 40-65 year old demographic on an AM station might work. Not sure a male focus is a good idea. Any new AM format wouldn’t make a big impact any time soon, but anything’s got to be better than an all-traffic format when we already have News 1130.

  11. Replying to Nicholas.
People over 55 simply don’t BUY ENOUGH STUFF to make them worthwhile to advertise to.
Go to your nearest grocery store.
-Who’s shopping carts are full to the top?… 30-40 year old moms.
    -Who’s little “baskets’ have 10 items?… people over 50.
It’s the same at car dealerships, on Robson street, at shopping malls, restaurants , and sports venues.
25 to 45 year olds are doing the spending.
Sure, boomers may have the $…but at 65ish, they’re scared to DEATH of it running out.

  12. Sportsnet 650 continues to get hammered by TSN 1040. How long can it last. Here is helpful tip. American talk radio such as CBS Sports relies on an old reliable formula. It opens the phone lines to their listeners. Sportsnet 650 relies on two talking heads discussing sports to each other. We listeners are seldom included. Given what Rogers did recently with CKWX Sportsnet 650 days are numbered. Already some programs are originated inTO.
