NBC Re-signs Matt Lauer for “Today”

Matt Lauer has re-signed with NBC News, remaining as “Today” show co-anchor, despite the show losing #1 morning ratings to ABC's "Good Morning America." NBC executives did not disclose the exact term of the new deal but indicated it was for more than two years. Lauer’s current contract, which paid him a reported $20 million a year, was set to expire in the coming months.

Pioneer Toronto radio station CFCA had its grand opening, Sonny & Cher made their TV debut, Ella Fitzgerald recorded her first sides, and Lady Day Billie Holliday, while hospitalized, was charged with drug possession. Concluding their earth-bound gigs were Mr. Wizard Don Herbert, Doc on Gunsmoke Milburn Stone, sportscaster Charlie Jones, and big bandleader Jimmy Dorsey. A court-appointed attorney evaluated the health of KASEM following moves made by CASEY's daughter, KERRY KASEM, to begin end of life measures.
