Radio Man’s Favourite Flashback with ZZ Top

La Grange

ZZ Top (pronounced “zee zee top”) is an American rock band from Houston, Texas, formed in 1969. The group consists of founder Billy Gibbons (guitar, lead vocals), Dusty Hill (bass, vocals), and Frank Beard (drums, percussion). Initially rooted in blues, ZZ Top’s style has evolved throughout their career, with a signature sound based on Gibbons’ blues guitar style and Hill and Beard’s rhythm section. Their lyrics, often embellished with sexual innuendo, focus on their Texas roots and humor. Popular for their live performances, the group has staged several elaborate tours.

  1. Billy Gibbons guitar playing ability, in my opinion, seldom gets the credit it’s due. When you listen to sound when it’s clean, his pickwork and fretting is spot on. He gets the most out of everything a string, pickup and guitar can deliver. Distortion and pedals take a little away from the nuance and don’t quite allow to see all the talent lying underneath.
