  1. The Top Dog (remember that?)
No growl left…isn’t sure whether to lean left or right, so sits in the middle with bark only coming from Campbell, Allen, Smythe and sometimes Bennett.
    The rest are pussies…

  2. RE: Darren M, I was just gonna say the same thing bud! LOL! All these drama divas on here that nonstop state how bad CKNW is, just look how bad it’s doing! OMG 2nd place how terrible! Just wait they will start barking here soon. 🙂

  3. CBC Radio One takes a hit, could it be that more and more news/talk listeners are growing more and more tired of CBC’s leftist, SJW, anti-Trump, anti-USA, pro any non western nations govt., anti-Canadian values notably anti-male, white male crap, but most of all kissing PM Trudeau’s arse 24/7.

CKNW holds to 2nd as in Vancouver area there is no other real news/talk choice short of Commie Broadcasting Corporation. CKNW’s quality has not improved, it still is lefty/liberal , SJW, anti-male, anti -Trump, crap too. It’s near tabloid style talk format is weak, not really detailed in information and it has so little caller segments.

Finally HOW DO ANY OF THE ALL SPORTS STATIONS STAY IN BUSINESS? I040 limps ahead of 650 as it’s a bit more varied in content, but Jeebus ALL TRAFFIC 730 out draws Sportsnet 650 ????????

  4. A closer look at the most important demo, % hours tuned adult 25-54. NW (male 25-54) last rating 10.8, this rating 9.6. NW (female 25-54) last rating 1.8, this rating 1.2

  5. Les H. – I agree with you regarding the sports stations.

    1. Unless they’re getting charged a very low rate, why would any company/service want to place their ads on these stations?

    2. I wonder what the average salary of the on air hosts are?

Based on their ratings and what they “should be charging” their advertisers, the on line hosts should be making close to minimum wage.

  6. Nao,

Yes, surely they can’t be paying too well at All Sports stations or that advertisers are stupid for spending big bucks on ads. I’d say though the most valuable times would be during live broadcasts, firstly Canucks games, secondly either Whitecaps or Lions games and later any other live sports. Surely most of their listener base are during these live games.

    IMO,

For news/talk/sports radio, the best format was one that CKNW had back in the late 1990’s and earlier. They had bonifide, professional and charismatic talk hosts, good news readers, news reporting and also had a mix of talk, news, traffic, sports with some popular music during the morning drive then with the great Frosty Forest and the same format during the afternoon drive with the late and entertaining Rick Honey.

Add Dan Russell Sportstalk from what was firstly 10:00pm to midnight and later 9:00pm to Midnight was a good thing too. Carrying live sports mostly the Canucks but also the Lions disrupted some early evening radio but was also a good draw and anchor to the dial for sports fans back then. On weekends it had the Owl Prowl with Jack Cullen and CKNW had some classic radio drama’s after midnight weekdays as well. That mix of talk, news, sports, music and entertainment was the best mix for stations like CKNW.

    I miss that format nowadays.

  7. Just a few thoughts…
1-Sports radio in Vancouver has got to be at its lowest ebb; I really don’t know how stations can continue to keep the format let alone meet payroll under normal circumstances. Even though TSN’s ratings are higher than Sportsnet, you know SN will prevail with the Canucks, and everything should condense down to one station in town with modest ratings at best in the long term.
2-I have tuned into Bloomberg radio off and on, and they do have some interesting shows but they need to shed ALL the sports otherwise they are diluting the new product with a loser format. The other day I tuned in for less than 10 seconds after finding out they were doing the play by play between a couple of American teams I couldn’t care less about. I am not sure if it is just old contracts running out, but the sooner they get rid of the sports they will probably move ahead of TSN 1040 with a lot less overhead, it’s only a matter of time.
3-After a couple of month’s hiatus, I tuned into the morning show on 1040, and I have to say What a Train Wreck!! I never thought much of Bro Jake’s sports knowledge, but I think he kept Pratt in line, so he was palatable. Between his grunting, unfinished thoughts and out of place comments you have to wonder how long it will last. I also get the feeling that the show used to have good production behind it which sounds lacking right now. The only saving grace for 1040 is Sportsnet has set their bar pretty low .

  8. So some are celebrating second place? CBC vs CKNW NW didnt come in second because they were to right wing or because they were to balanced. They came in second because they arent as good as the CBC. BTW the CBC sucks. Its so far in the tank for the left wing that it has less credibility than CNN.

  9. Darren

When you are a 4 or 5 in A Sea of 3’s you are more than likely going to be First or Second in the Rating Game.

You seem to be “Happy To Swim in the Sea to Mediocrity”, most of the rest us want just a little bit more than that.

  10. And you actually BELIEVE these numbers to be accurate? Figures lie and liars figure…..

“RADIO” listenership is down PERIOD…..so you are taking numbers that are 100% across the board DOWN because of streaming, YouTube, cheap data etc etc……

ALL the numbers are down….and the destruction of CommercialKNW will continue. Just for fun I timed the commercial time and talk time for 20 after to 30. Ten minutes…..

7 minutes 10 seconds of crap
2 minutes 90 seconds of actual talk radio

  11. I am actually having a tough time listening to radio these days. Quite honestly, these days I have been listening to Anthony Fuery (sp?) on Canada Talks on Sirius satellite. I used to listen to 1040 a lot but the non-stop social justice crap that Sekeres et al were doling out started to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Even the CFL on TV is doing that to me. Diversity is Strength ads and t-shirts. Stop Domestic Violence (I don’t do domestic violence an in my over 6 decades never knew anyone who did), Pink October, etc etc. On top of that, Suitor’s over the top man-love for the military makes me gag. Appreciate, fine, but Suitor positively oozes man-love. Yuk. No man does that.

  12. Have any of you cry babies notice, that it seems to be only BC people complaining about radio? Look at all the other markets above and you don’t see people having mini meltdowns!

  13. I 100% agree with Tim. Especially everybody having a hate on for Corus owned stations. Sure, I think local radio was more and interactive 15-20 years ago, but you cant go back. People in this market are listening less to commercial radio and probably commercial tv. Too many commercials and inexperienced hosts lose me too. The hosts have to grow on you or they could be gone to two years. Why even give them a try knowing this.

  14. I never changed the dial from 1040 but recently it’s become hard to listen to. It’s hard to argue the comments about sports radio because I am a fan of them. But the market can only handle one sports station, barely, let alone 2.5 (Bloomberg still broadcasts live sports broadcasts) and I think who ever holds the rights to the Canucks will survive. 650 dipped below 1040 accordingly to these ratings, probably because it’s the off-season for the Canucks, so those numbers will reverse trend in the following period. Most of the talent seems to be with TSN, with exceptions, but the loss of Canucks might prove fatal. 650 would never exist if they didn’t have the Nuck’s rights. Very funny-sad to see 730 achieve higher ratings, good for them lol! All traffic radio beating a sports station- wow.
Totally agree Les’ comment about NW having the best format when they had the Canucks. That made them a powerhouse, an institution, which is far from the present. For the future of sports radio in this market, the best bet on success would be with only one station because that’s all the market can handle. Sportsnet and TSN are rivals and any merger into one station is a pipe dream. So we will be inundated with mediocre sports radio entertainment. TSN is more TMZ than ESPN. Sportsnet needs to aquire a few big name broadcasters who have success in the sports radio market. As an example, what if Don Taylor moved to 650? Definitely possible because of his past relationship with Sportsnet, and something like that would be the nail in the coffin for TSN1040
