Sun News Network will go off the air Friday morning, CTV News has confirmed.

Quebecor’s cable news television channel will permanently shut down at 5 a.m. Friday, leaving some 200 people — 150 employees and about 50 freelancers — without jobs.

In 2013, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission rejected the network’s bid to be carried on basic cable.

At the time, Sun News said it wouldn’t be able to survive without mandatory carriage status.

Mandatory carriage would have generated significant revenue for the network, which has been losing millions of dollars per year. But the CRTC said Sun News didn’t meet the criteria for a mandatory carriage.
