KGO’s Drex

The single-monikered ‘DreX’ has been tapped to host a new nightly (7-10pm) show on Cumulus Media News/Talker KGO/San Francisco. It’s a return to radio after a brief hiatus for DreX, who spent nearly a decade hosting mornings at CHR WKSC (Kiss-FM)/Chicago.

The move also marks a return to the Bay Area for the veteran air personality, previously heard on KSJO/San Jose. His radio resume also includes on-air stints inPhiladelphiaDallasDetroit and San Antonio. “DreX brings his unique voice to KGO for a highly compelling program that is fresh, live and local,” said Cumulus/San Francisco VP/Market Manager Justin Wittmayer.

“The Bay Area is in for quite an experience with DreX.” Meanwhile, Cumulus SVP Programming Mike McVay also commented on the new addition to the KGO line-up saying, “Drex brings a unique perspective to the News/Talk format and an uncanny ability to entertain and inform in his own engaging style.”

The new show debuts on Tuesday, February 3rd.

This Drex is not to be confused with by local Vancouver, BC broadcaster Drex on CKNW.

  1. C’mon, give this Drex a chance.

It at least suggests Cumulus knows it goofed by firing virtually all its open line hosts and going all news three years ago.

Until now, KGO has only had syndicated stuff after midnight and the so-so musings of Karel and a couple of other part-timers on weekends. KGO ratings have sunk vastly below the levels that led to the mass firings. Over the years, San Franciso broadcast blogger Rich Lieberman has detailed the whole sorry experiment, lashing the arrogance and imcompetence of Cumulus.

Let’s hope Ian K. and the other bofffins at CKNW are paying attention so as to not replicate the fiasco.
