I played “Sky Pilot” quite a bit back in its day. I was never really sure if it was an indictment of the Vietnam War or targeting military chaplains who sent boys off to die with some false promise while they themselves stayed safely behind or just a description of the reality of war in a particular moment, but I leaned toward the chaplains as they were in the title.
I am not a religious person by any stretch of the imagination, but 50 years later I wonder how many “sky pilots” had their own crisis in faith because of the role they were playing. I am not giving them all a pass; however it wouldn’t be fair to condemn them all either.
