The San Jose Sharks are hosting Pride Night at SAP Center Saturday, but their goalie will not be included in the celebration.
James Reimer announced on Twitter he will not wear a pride-themed warmup jersey before the game against the New York Islanders.
Reimer cited his religious beliefs.
“For all 13 years of my NHL career, I have been a Christian — not just in title, but in how I choose to live my life daily. I have a personal faith in Jesus Christ who died on the cross for my sins and, in response, asks me to love everyone and follow him,” he said via the team’s Twitter account. “I have no hate in my heart for anyone, and I have always strived to treat everyone that I encounter with respect and kindness.
“In this specific instance, I am choosing not to endorse something that is counter to my personal convictions which are based on the Bible, the highest authority in my life.”
Reimer’s decision seemingly goes against the night’s theme, but the Sharks said in a separate statement they “acknowledge and accept the rights of individuals to express themselves, including how or whether they choose to express their beliefs, regardless of the cause or topic.”

Mr. Reimer is entitled to his religious beliefs and I’m glad his employer is not forcing his hand over an issue that is personal. His obligation is to fulfill his contract to the best of his ability, and unless this particular celebration is included in his contract, he has every right to say no. In his employer’s statement, they appear to agree.
Glad to see Mr Reimer standing up for his personal beliefs. The White Christian Male seems to be an endangered species in today’s woke world.
As a gay person I stand beside him for not wanting to wear it. I am getting so sick and tired of the LGBT or whatever they call themselves these days, trying to just shove their sexuality in EVERYONE’S face including myself WHO IS GAY! Pride was formed to get equal rights, guess what, THEY HAVE IT! I am 44 years old and I have never been to a pride parade in my life, and will not go to one! Pride is supposed to be “inclusive” and represents the “community”. Well half naked guys prancing around on a float, shoving their “junk” in people’s faces does NOT represent me! Why are we shoving gender identity, and that crap in school children’s faces?! Let them be kids for god sake! When they become adults they can decide for themselves! This they/them and he/him and she/her. Seriously?!? If you have a vagina you are a female, if you have a penis you are a male. It’s pretty damn simple. Again me as a gay male I hate this crap. Enough is enough already!
