The feds gave publishers of mainstream media more than $600 million in taxpayers’ money, but the cash hasn’t created jobs that were promised, says Blacklock’s Reporter.

In fact, there were thousands of continued net loss of jobs, despite publishers’ claims of increased readership through the pandemic.

“The decrease in advertising revenues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led to service reductions and newspaper closures resulting in the loss of more than 2,500 jobs,” said a briefing note from the Heritage Department.

The department said it knew of “the hiring of 342 journalists” but only because their wages were subsidized 100% under a $50 million Local Journalism Initiative.
