OTTAWA — After months of investigation, suspended senator Mike Duffy was criminally charged by the RCMP Thursday over his expense claims, including a $90,000 payment from the prime minister’s top aide to help him repay his spending claims.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud says the 31 charges involve Duffy’s claims for living expenses, claims for travel expenses unconnected with Senate business and fraudulent contracts.

They also cover the $90,000 Duffy received from Nigel Wright, the prime minister’s former chief of staff.

Michaud says the charges cover more than $200,000 in phoney expenses.

They include money he claimed for living expenses in what he claimed was a secondary residence in Ottawa and expenses he charged for travel on personal or political business.
The bribery charge covers the $90,000 payment from Wright.

Duffy will appear in court in Ottawa on September 16, the RCMP says.

Duffy is currently at home in Prince Edward Island — a residence at the heart of the Senate spending scandal. He has spent months recuperating from bypass surgery.

  1. Sadly, the Canadian taxpayer will still cover his medical expenses from health issues caused by his morbid obesity (because that’s what we do in a liberal democracy), not to mention the money he stole as a Harper-appointed Senator.

  2. Really? Are trying to use this to take a shot at the liberals? Wow. *Slow clap* Well played.

I was in PEI a while a back they were actually embarrassed that this guy represents them. But it’s not like they elected him.. Toronto.
