Afternoon Host Mark Brennae Gone from Victoria’s News/Talk C-FAX 1070

No official confirmation, but a little bird flew over the transom to tell PSR that Mark Brennae is no longer with Victoria News/Talk C-FAX AM1070. (He is pictured above in happier times.)

Sure enough, C-FAX news director Ryan Price is running the PM drive show today.  And all traces of Brennae have been removed from the station website.   That little bird may have known something.

That is sad news, I really enjoyed listening to Mark, a breath of fresh air at a station that can be short of same at times!

November 20, 2019 - 12:55 pm

Romy

sorry to hear this. I looked forward to listening to him on my drive home every day

Oh no … I enjoyed his style very much. I will miss him. Yes as Cory mentions a breath of fresh real air. Unike the morning drone.
I really did not like loosing the 5 o’clock adorable guy on CTV, but at least he is on Shaw. Too many changes.

I’m sad that he is no longer there. The station has not said anything and that is unsatisfactory to someone who was as awesome as Mark

This station is a poor version of what used to get the best radio in Victoria. If I wanted to listen to drivel from other parts of the country, I can get that elsewhere. I miss good coverage of local issues. My classmates and I were on a very early broadcast giving book reports. That would never happen now. I used to leave my dial on 1070 and loved being a guest on several occasions. I can’t even get them to mention my book in pro hockey in Victoria they took 8 years to research and write. I am fed up and likely will not listen to this station anymore.

Sad to hear that Mark will no longer be on CFAX. I wondered what was up yesterday when he was not on. I have to shake my head at that station some times… Mark, I wish you the best of luck in your future. And I hope that it includes something here in Victoria. You are already missed.

This stations has been dealing with plenty of quality control issues for a long time- dead air, engineering issues – some strange announcing issues in the evenings- and recently on weekends except for local reruns from the weekdays and those commercially strong programs there is no longer local news (except for one or two major news items – ie the school strike but otherwise only from IHeart in Ontario… I have often flipped over to CBC to listen to really good programming — or the Q for music..
Coast to Coast is free to CFAX or IHeart and the extreme radio programming often has some rather questionable content – and American – only one of the hosts on occasional weekends is Canadian –
There have been several exits like this from CFAX over the years – perhaps there are management issues now in Victoria and perhaps should be some other changes to make a better Victoria station – perhaps this is the catalyst to make something better for Victoria…

I’m not surprised, Mark talked to much , it was hard to get on air . In saying that , when I got on , it was a great way to blow off steam , especially in regards to Helps Hell, a suggestion, how about a couple of hours a day call in just about the city council and Mayor, it would be great entertainment , your ratings would skyrocket, John

That is very disappointing. As people have stated above, Mark was a breath of fresh air, and I looked forward to his show each day on the drive home. He will be missed.

Really?! Unless he pulled the plug, what on earth are you people thinking. Mark was the best person – hands down – on this station. He made boring topics interesting & real to the average listener. He told it like it is & that is often lacking in media these days. It’s a sad day for Victoria. I am truly disappointed. You should have kept him at all costs.
Mark, I hope you show up on another station. I hope you know how much you meant to the listeners. Best of luck, I’m sure they won’t find anyone as good as you to replace you.
So tired of the repeats already.

I was wondering what was going on yesterday and the day before when they were referring to it as the afternoon show. As someone who is on the younger end of the CFAX demographic, I enjoyed Mark because I could identify with him and appreciated his outlook. Sorry to see you go, Mark Hope you turn up elsewhere 🙂

They need to syndicate Alex Jones in that spot. He tells it like it really is!

Sorry to hear Mark is gone, thought he was just away for a few days. What happened? Another loss appears to be the weekend local news, it’s annoying only hearing CP news. Guess this is what happens when HO is in Toronto rather than Victoria.

November 21, 2019 - 3:13 pm

Gail

Really sad! He was so cheerful and upbeat and will be sorrowly missed. I stopped listening to mid-morning when Bell media took Pamela Macall off the air and now will stop listening to the drive home.

Sorry to see Mark go…he was great!!!
Hope he will stay in Victoria he was a great ambassador for Victoria
Ryan Price is not a good talk show host…
CFAX is making it difficult to keep the dial on 1070

November 21, 2019 - 6:57 pm

Jake

I didn’t always agree with him and found him annoying sometimes but I much prefer being provoked than bland noise. He held the city’s feet to the fire where no other news would really cover. He was good at his job. Perhaps too good?

November 22, 2019 - 7:00 am

Geoff McGuire

This is upsetting, but not surprising for CFAX. I looked forward to Mark’s show while driving my route. Guess I’ll listen to music now. Eventually CFAX will fill that slot with another pre recorded show I imagine.
Mark I hope you stay in Victoria. Maybe become a sales rep’ for Hoyne’s Brewery.
We miss you Mark.
Best of luck.
Geoff

Very disappointing! Mark was the best personality and held my attention for the full duration of this show. He’s smart, tactful with guests, and polite. Big mistake Bell. If a cut was really necessary I would’ve let Ryan Price go before Mark Brennae. That being said the high paid execs at Bell Media should have been targeted first. I won’t be listening to CFAX on the drive home anymore.

November 22, 2019 - 9:21 am

Celia

I am sad that Mark is not on CFAX. He had interesting topics and handled them well. Everything you spoke about you dealt with professionally.
Mark said it like it was.
Mark was very good at what he did and will be missed.

I am sorry to hear that. I enjoyed Mark and his show on the commute home. I will miss him.

November 22, 2019 - 4:05 pm

CFAX continues to go down hill in regards to quality of its on air staff. They fire all the good personalities such Ian Jessop, Pamela McCall and now Mark B. Most of the news casters quite simply do not know how to read. They are constantly mispronouncing words and names, dead air etc. Also what is with the recorded programming from 1:00 – 3:00 in the afternoons and repeat programing in the evenings ?? Who wants to hear a recorded program in this age of instant news.. Give your head a shake CFAX you are quickly becoming a irrelevant to the listeners of Victoria.

November 22, 2019 - 5:02 pm

Rose

Mark was the best.
I’m shocked that he’s not doing the show anymore! (I hope it was his decision)
I always looked forward to it…
Mark was a real natural on air. Lots of fun, lots of knowledge, lots of PERSONALITY!!
All the best Mark!

November 22, 2019 - 5:28 pm

TP

Unreal! I so enjoyed Mark . What goes on there that every so often without any warning you suddenly ditch great hosts!
I hope it was his decision too.
Hope you land on your feet -Victoria loves you.

November 22, 2019 - 5:29 pm

Just turned off my radio, loved Terry Moore, was sad to see him go, but Mark eas good. Bye CFAX.

November 22, 2019 - 5:36 pm

Well hell Mark.
Yup,,,, that’s show biz. Not a doubt in the world that you will resurface a better person and with a better gig. Maybe you can now make it out to a few more ball games bud!

I always looked forward to the sports trivia on Friday afternoons. Good luck Mark!

Remember Mark from his Ottawa days..Same thing happened at CFRA (ottawa) less than 2 weeks ago when they fired a top rated talk show host…No reason given….

Years ago when I was looking for a job in Radio in the 70’s, I took a trip to Victoria. I think those were the great days in the Mel Cooper era in Victoria. I visited the CFAX building before they even had their FM Stations . When I entered the building I was standing at the front counter. There was a gentleman standing to my left. He told the receptionist that he was there for a morning interview. The receptionist asked “Can I ask who’s calling”? The man on my left looked at me in amazement. The receptionist didn’t know who he was. It was Dave Barrett!!! I realized then and there I wouldn’t be working for CFAX at that time. Should I have played the Soundtrack from “Gypsy” ou in my car in parking lot?

November 22, 2019 - 10:57 pm

Deb

Oh no – he was the only reason I listened to and enjoyed on cfax!

November 22, 2019 - 11:08 pm

jevon

anyone who knows me understands I live and breath CFAX, to a fault lol. but this is getting a little much. how can you be the most trusted news source when its someone different all the time?? frank Stanford should go downtown and kick some A#$!!

November 25, 2019 - 9:26 am

Jack

Sorry to hear this. Another bad decision by CFAX and its owners Bell Media. This station used to be more relevant and professional when privately owned and the owner Mel Cooper had a vested interest in his community. Now run by the bean counters in TO who have no interest other than bottom line. Mark brought some humor to the afternoon drive along with interesting topics.
Mark don’t give up on us your an islander now and this is your home buddy.

November 25, 2019 - 6:59 pm

Anna

Very sorry to hear this.
He was very good and relatable. He was great with local issues. If they do not find someone good I will be switching my dial.
Very sad! I wish him all the best, where ever he goes they will be lucky to have him.

November 26, 2019 - 1:46 am

I’ll miss ur voice! You became like a friend, even though I never met ya ! Best of luck

We used to have the radio tuned onto CFAX all day. We really miss Joe Perkins and now we read that Mark is gone! Big mistake CFAX! Best of luck, Mark.

I really enjoyed his show. Thought he was o vacation this week. Too bad for the listeners. Best of luck Mark in wherever you go.

November 26, 2019 - 8:28 pm

Well I hope he went out on his terms. Although unlikely I imagine. CBC from here on in. Can’t take other CFAX hosts that appear paid by the syllable or duration of their convoluted diatribes – that’s all I see CFAX offering now. Old Mark there didn’t take his positions so harshly – seemed he could laugh at himself and genuinely consider common ground, not just give it lip service. Other than Al, the only host I’d have a beer with.

November 27, 2019 - 3:28 pm

Art Cooper

Cfax slowly down hill for me… news kids replacing newscasters..I understand costs today, where is the program director working with and helping them to improve. I don’t listen to weekend news anymore as I have switched to Chek 6. The young lady doing news seems to always end each sentence on the same downbeat. I do enjoy mornings up to 1. I try to always be positive but it’s getting harder

November 27, 2019 - 4:11 pm

Nancy

I’m so sorry to hear Mark is no longer with CFAX. I listened to his afternoon show and found him very interesting, cheerful, humorous and had great guests.
I guess it’s just one more reason to find another station. Ryan Price isn’t a talk show host that I will listen to.
I think CFAX is really going down hill and I think that’s too bad.
Good luck Mark. I think you are a real asset to Victoria. I hope you stay in town.

November 27, 2019 - 10:14 pm

Carl

I can t believe mark is gone! What a the deal cfax!!?
I loved his afternoon show ,always looked forward to it. The new format with Ryan price is totally garbage! Looks like I ll be listening to podcasts on the way home… bye cfax…you dropped the freaking ball with the new afternoon goof

November 28, 2019 - 9:31 am

Diane

Once Al Ferraby is gone, there will be no reason for listening to CFAX. Okay – maybe Adam Stirling in the morning but that’s it. I can’t believe the complete demise of this once great and wonderful radio station. I started listening in 1969 when Mel had the station. He had a vision and followed through. Now we have so many recorded programs, repeats – you name it. Mark had made Victoria his home and gave his all. It was bad enough losing Ian Jessop but this really is the last straw. I’m not impressed with Ryan and the Afternoon show. Way too many young folks on now – nothing very professional. CFAX has always been our go to station but I feel no loyalty anymore.

November 29, 2019 - 5:19 pm

Chris

Thought Mark was maybe on holiday but now realize he must have been let go by Bell Media along with a number of others across Canada. What a shame! I really enjoyed Mark’s show and his sign off — Enjoy beautiful Victoria! Hope Mark can find a suitable position and stay in Victoria. You are definitely missed! Good Luck for the future!

Miss Mark on my drive home. Ryan Price is so yawwwnnnn……just a rerun of the morning bore……Did not always agree with Mark but he was interesting and addressed current issues and I often learned something. The only shows worth hearing now are TechTalk and The Whole Home Show with Tony Joe. Back to my own music!

Like many, I too will miss bubbly Mark. As others have stated, the quality of CFAX programming has shot down hill in the past few months and they let their top on air people go. The quality control has gone too. Many hours of dead air, repeat after repeat of poor programing, and not a reliable station in case of an emergency.
Good luck Mark in your future career. You should have no problem getting a position on air again. CFAX does not deserve to have your talent on air, Thank you for the past years and a job well done.👍

Too bad…i found mark to be upbeat, practical, interested in Victorians and politics, open-minded and eternally well-mannered even with the most obnoxious caller. This radio station must have some really poor management much of the time…listening to mark’s show made a long drive easier so…bye bye cfax. And i wish Mark success …he deserves it.

December 3, 2019 - 3:33 pm

Ryan

Ryan Price is a terrible show host with no original thoughts or opinions and so PC. Unlistenable! Was disappointed when Joe’s noon show was taking off. 4 hours of Adam then Ryan in the afternoon. Dull… going to move down the dial to CBC 690 greater variety of topics and discussion

Like other folks, I thought Mark Brennae was on vacation. I have been listening to CFAX for many decades. I do not like the way radio stations eat their young, I find it painful. I listened to Mark every day, M-F. I enjoyed his show. He had an interesting variety of topics, guests and program segments.

Good luck Mark, I wish you all the best.
