Updates on Stingray changes

Just got an update on changes that were made in terms of Stingray regarding my earlier post linked here.

First, there were some layoffs in Alberta, here is the news,

Today in Alberta we are thrilled to announce an exciting new program. “The Real Wake Up” is a new province-wide morning show hosted by Vinnie and Randi based in Red Deer. The show will be carried by almost all of Stingray’s rural Alberta stations. Each radio station will continue to have a local host who updates local news, weather, and community information. Local service to our communities will not be interrupted in any way.

We are extremely excited about this new show. However, as a result of this initiative, some positions have been eliminated at some of our rural Alberta stations.

Katie and Ed

In addition, the Katie & Ed morning show from 90.3 AMP Radio in Calgary will now be syndicated in mornings at Kool-FM in Bonnyville and Wayne-FM in Wainwright. These two radio stations join the six existing affiliates of the Katie & Ed late show.

We are extremely excited about both Vinnie & Randi and Katie & Ed. Investing in high-level talent is critical for our industry in 2019 and beyond. The teams that create these two shows are amongst the best in the business. Both of these shows are world class and will bring fantastic entertainment and engagement to their audiences.

I predicted Breeze would replace Rewind 103.9 but here is what I was told today,

We have no plans to rebrand Rewind 103.9 in Sudbury. We had a #1 book this fall. We’re actually syndicating the boom 97-3 music log into Sudbury, and the results have been fantastic. We also have Alex Hindmarch (ex-Jack/Calgary, Fresh/Edmonton, Q107/Toronto) doing mornings. That station is doing great and we have no plans to mess with that success.

And last but not least Stingray has made one other change,

We have rebranded The Canadian Hit 40 Countdown to The Stingray Hit List Countdown, reflecting the branding of Stingray’s pay-TV audio and mobile app “Hit List” channel. The show continues to be hosted by Mauler, Rush, Jenni, and Brady from Hot 89.9 in Ottawa.

You might want to look at all the layoffs and firings in Kamloops when NL broadcasting was purchased by stingray. These stations in Kamloops are just a shadow of themselves within the last year.

VT from outside the market being used. Its been sad watching these once mighty and respected local stations being gutted here in Kamloops.

It’s a Voice track/syndication world. Makes sense for a company like Stingray—it’s what they do. Lotta jobs in small markets gonzo

Listened to 96.3 The Breeze in Edmonton over the weekend. Music, then liners into spots and then out of the stopset, ID’s into music. Sad for a major market station to be doing this. Whatever happened to having “personalities” on the radio. There is a radio station in town that “gets it” and they have been consistently number 1 since they have signed on. People forget that Harvard tried to do this a few years back with Lite 95.7 and flopped big time. People forget that “Personalities” make a station ie like EZ Rock 104.9 or 96.3 K-Lite FM years ago.

Just the start, soon there will just be commercials and songs

Stingray has succeeded with no announcers for years.

Training grounds are almost gone…sad?

Kamloops Koi Fish

Newcap/Stingray change in Kamloops were based on bad attitudes and weeding out the “negative nellies”. Every on-air position has been re-hired, with what I hear is two more additional positions in the news room and producer roles. They wanted to move out the old crooners who weren’t willing to adapt to the times. Looks like they succeeded.

Sadly, a shrinking industry. There is no way I would recommend anyone become a radio DJ.
