Barry White & Love Unlimited Orchestra have today’s almost forotten track

Not sure how forgotten this is, as I’m sure it remains a mainstay of easy listening radio everywhere, but I chose it today as an example of when an artist who forces me to push the button whenever one of his vocals comes up on the airwaves, has one redeeming track…Barry White, to my ears, is unctuous, overstated and just not for my tastes, with this one exception…what he was, for himself and other artists, was an arranger of the highest order, as best demonstrated on his big instrumental hit, Love’s Theme, by the Love Unlimited Orchestra…the strings, combined with the disco beat, resulted in a song that I can never hear often enough…and, though the rest of the album contained enough of his “sexy love god” basso vocals, this song, minus any vocals at all, swings in a way that few others did in its time…if forced to listen to disco or Barry White on a MUZAK system, this would be the one I’d choose to listen to, and each and every bar sounds, to my ears, like a perfect example of arranging…

Greg Simpson

Greg Simpson firmly believes his career in the music industry officially began on March 14, 1965 when a band gave him ten dollars as commission for helping them find a gig. He hasn’t looked back since then and looks forward to celebrating his fiftieth in 2015 with an enormous party paid for by the hundreds of dollars he’s made since then. His career has covered all aspects from radio for many years, and including working for record labels, artists and, since 1992, Canadian Music Week where he programs the radio stream and manages all conference streams and events in real time annually. He also attends half a dozen conferences a year doing research for CMW and is generally accepted as a knowledgeable cat with a few stories to tell. At the root of it all, though, is his undying love for music and musicians.
