Feargal Sharkey has today’s almost forgotten track

Every once in a while when I was a radio programmer a track would come along that I would champion only to see it fall short of measurable success…of course, after eight weeks, if it wasn’t performing well at retail in London, nor nationally, I’d have to swallow my pride and let the track go, no matter my affection for and belief in it…such a track was this one by the former frontman for the Undertones…I heard a great voice and a great hook, but my listeners just never felt about the track the way I did…then, as sometimes happens, it started to click in other markets and I was able to find a place for it again…I still love the track, but don’t think you’ll hear it that often anymore…

Greg Simpson firmly believes his career in the music industry officially began on March 14, 1965 when a band gave him ten dollars as commission for helping them find a gig. He hasn’t looked back since then and looks forward to celebrating his fiftieth in 2015 with an enormous party paid for by the hundreds of dollars he’s made since then. His career has covered all aspects from radio for many years, and including working for record labels, artists and, since 1992, Canadian Music Week where he programs the radio stream and manages all conference streams and events in real time annually. He also attends half a dozen conferences a year doing research for CMW and is generally accepted as a knowledgeable cat with a few stories to tell. At the root of it all, though, is his undying love for music and musicians.

I agree, a nice Tune and a pleasing presentation.

It is rather interesting how some Acts just do not get the Career they want or in many cases deserve.

There is certainly no shortage of Performers that did not quite get the success or traction one might think.

I think one excellent Performer and skilled Musician that has not as yet received the traction he deserves is Colin James.

I personally believe that James could be a Major Talent.

Thanks for this!

I may get Push Back and some disagreement on this but for some reason the subject of Air Play and Talent reminds me of how way back in the early Days of Canada’s Much Music the Toronto ViJays kept Pushing Corey Hart ahead of a much more sophisticated and talented Bryan Adams.

Hart was OK and sold some Records but he was nowhere near as talented to Adams. Even though he had some nice Sunglasses.

None the Less the Toronto Vijays from the “Centre of the Universe” kept pushing Hart until Adams became a Mega Star. .

Eventually they were forced to Raise the “White Flag” !!

I agree that James is a major talent, though you may be selling him short…though his success is, by and large, limited to Canada, I know for a fact that his asking price for a performance puts him among the very successful…and regarding Corey, who is now semiretired and living in the Caribbean to the best of my knowledge, he had the added advantage, in the video days, of fitting in with the concept of “teen idol”…I do not sell him short, though I played him begrudgingly at the time, but in my opinion you are comparing apples to oranges…and Bryan never suffered as a result, as he was always successful once he got past Let Me Take You Dancing…

Good News that James is doing well and good news that Hart seems to be doing well!

Have seen James a few times and he is a very good live performer.

Never saw Hart perform so I am not sure if I could say that about him but one never knows.

It could be just me and you would know better but it did appear to me that MM was pushing Hart over Adams. I believe the Adams Talent and ability to offer timely relevant music to many different people of many ages far beyond the Borders of Canada ensured a Career of Decades instead of a handful of years.

Only one man’s opinion, every once in a while I have one.

Interesting, I just re-read this and I can see it still bothers me.

Thanks again.
