Heard he's gone. Wow, the Edmonton marketplace is topsy turvy these days.

MORE HORSE-TRADING TO COME IN EDMONTON'S RADIO MARKET

You'd think, with the orgy of radio and TV station selling that has gone on for the past five to 10 years, that things would be settling down.

Nope.

In its infinite wisdom, the high foreheads who run the Canadian Radio/Television and Telecommunications Commission have decided that Edmonton can support as many as four more new radio stations, all going after the same finite advertising dollars and finite listenership out there.

There are dozens of proposals that the CRTC will hear, from big companies, little companies and non-existent companies (unless they win a license). They will be pitching "formats" from all over the map, and make extravagant promises to get the license.

The irony, of course, is that the ultimate idea is to get a license by making all these promises to the CRTC, then, as soon as is legally possible, sell the new, struggling station to one of the big guys, take your windfall $10 to $20 million and retire to a Vancouver hideaway with a winter villa in Phoenix.

Some of the scenarios.

Media giant Rogers is a late-comer to Edmonton radio/TV, but now owns CityTV TV, Sonic and World FM radio stations, and soon a second TV station, a new multi-cultural TV station to be called Omni.

Rogers wants more radio stations, as any one company can own four stations in any one city in Canada - with the savings that come from joint newscasters, sales force, etc.

Rogers has an application to open an all-news FM station in town. But if it doesn't get that license, Rogers will be looking at buying existing stations.

There are industry insiders who say Rawlco, owners of Magic 99 and a new station in Calgary, would sell to Rogers in a heartbeat - a notion strenuously denied by Rawlco's president.

But Rawlco's president is not the owner, and owners have been known not to confide in any employees when it comes to deciding whether to sell or not.

Meanwhile CTVglobemedia is one big mother of a media company across Canada, but in Edmonton only has CTV Edmonton TV and one smaller radio station, The Bounce. Many say CTV would like to expand their radio holdings, and Edmonton would be a natural choice.

Stay tuned. The churn and burn is far from over.

http://blog.canoe.ca/hicksonsix/2008/07/21/more_horse_trading_to_come_in_edmonton_s

From Thursday morning's

Graham Hicks
Hicks on Six column in the Edmonton Sun:

TOUGHER THAN IT LOOKS

In the perplexing department.

Management at Capital FM have yet to decide on a permanent morning show host.

The Capital FM website makes no mention of on-air personnel.

But some guy in the letters to the editor yesterday was giving me the gears for not praising current Capital FM morning hosts Jason Roberts and Kari Skelton.

Let you in on a little secret.

Morning show announcers don't get there overnight. They pay their dues. They become well established, either in another city or in another time slot in the same city.

The morning show is the flagship of any radio station. The quality of the morning show greatly affects listenership. A difference in ratings can mean millions in lost or extra ad revenue.

Capital FM is looking for a "name" announcer, somebody who their target audience may have grown up with.

That's why "name" morning hosts make the big bucks, while most other on-air personnel are wage slaves.

Which relative wrote that letter?

THIS 'N' THAT

* Congrats to CHED's Eileen Bell, who took a two-month sabbatical to go complete her BA in communications at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. "I started it," says Eileen, "in 1977." Straight A's too!

http://www.edmonontonsun.com

Hicks on the S2 ratings for Edmonton

From the Graham Hicks blog (Edmonton Sun)...

MORE ON THE SPRING II RADIO RATINGS IN EDMONTON

More from the "Spring II" Bureau of Broadcast Measurements, the now four times a year analysis of who's listening to what radio station, based on samplings from test periods.

"Share" refers to a formula based on number of people listened, and hours tuned in per week. The number in brackets is the "share" for the same time period the year before.

1. CISN, 13 share (5.6). First time in many years that CISN is back on top. Not that parent company Corus entertainment frets, given it's usually its all-news/sports CHED and CISN in the one-two spot in the Edmonton market.

CISN benefited from the demise of Big Earl, the third country radio station in the market that was a big failure on Newcap's part. Plus it's a well-run station, with heritage jocks in Chris Scheetz and Bruce Bowie and when Big Earl came on the scene, it took the time to review its own act and clean up any small faults.

2. CHED 11.3 (12.3). No big deal for the super-station to be in #2 spot, especially since there were no Oilers broadcasts during the rating period.

3. The Bear 9.7 (7.7). Like a rock, with stable on-air personalities and a mix of old and new rock that has garnered a big audience.

4. The Bounce 8.2 (6.5). This is a surprise, and we'll have to watch to see if the Bounce can consistently stay above a 7 share. Could the Bounce have peeled listeners away from Sonic? Plus its' personnel have settled down into long-term runs on various time slots.

5. EZ Rock 8.1 (7.7). Holding off the invasion of similar formats - Magic, Capital and Joe FM, very well.

6. CFCW 7.3 (3.1). That number in brackets was one of those classic BBM wierdnesses, where a station for no reason has a big dive, then comes back up in a book or two. Usually it's because the methodology in collecting the data is faulty. Meanwhile, ironically, CFCW did well because its sister station Big Earl - kaput - was no longer cannibalizing listeners. Plus the morning show of Sharon Mallon and Danny Hooper is settling into a good long run.

(The BBMs appeared to have screwed up royally, throwing in CFCW-FM (Cam-FM out of Camrose) with exactly the same numbers as CFCW. Which is totally impossible, as Camrose doesn't A) beam into Edmonton and has never had more than a 1 share ever.)

7. JOE-FM 6.7 (8.7). This is a funny one, given Joe's a good nostalgia '80s station with decent on-air personality. But it did drop significantly this time out. Maybe due to Capital FM?

8. Capital FM 4.9 (2.0 as Big Earl). When Cool 880 died on the AM dial, and Big Earl was on life-support, Newcap flipped Big Earl into a more modern FM version of Cool 880.

Folks do like the music, and, without a name DJ yet for the morning show, the station is showing surprisingly good numbers coming out of the box.

With Magic 99 not budging out of the basement, might Capital FM go after former Edmonton boss jock Rob Christie to anchor its morning show? Be a good move for Capital FM.

9. CBC 1 4.9 (9.. The number in brackets was a big BBM anomaly, and CBC Edmonton has gone back to its forever 4 to 5 share. Should be higher given the quality of the local shows, but there's still a big segment in town that believes the CBC is too anti-Alberta (anti red meat, pick-up trucks, free enterprise, Conservatives and oil sands. Pro anybody knocking Alberta for whatever reason) to listen on a regular basis.

10. Sonic 4.6 (8.0). Very strange drop in the ratings. Suspect it's another BBM methodology mistake.

11. K-97 4.4 (4.1 as K-Rock). How the mighty have fallen. K-Rock decided, with its ratings in the toilet, to pursue its "heritage" as K-97. Seems to be window-dressing. Let's hope for a point or two rising in the ratings.

12. Magic 99 2.0 (3.7). Oh dear. My buddy Rob Christie and his station continue to languish in the BBM doldrums, and as it's going on two years, and ratings keep dropping ... Some say Rawlco will bail and put the station up for sale.

13. CBC 2 2.0 (5.3). Who cares.

14. iNews880 1.9 (2.1 as Cool 880). This bold and expensive exercise in 24-hour a day news is just getting underway. Sure hope it works, because it's terrific having an all-news station with plenty of local content. Support local news! Keep dropping in on iNews when you're in your car!

15. The Team 1260 1.6 (1.2): The team may get tiny "share" but it has a big audience in the sports-crazy males, 25 to 50. And its top shows are doing well both in content and advertising.

Radio show over too soon,
like Corner Gas

John Gormley

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix
Friday, July 11, 2008

What happens when you take one clever funny guy from Tisdale and connect him to a great idea and a talented cast and crew?

The result is the hit CTV series Corner Gas, now midway through shooting the last 19 episodes in the series' sixth and final season.

On Thursday, we took my radio show on the road to Dog River for a four-hour tribute to this great Canadian comedy series that unabashedly sells itself as small-town Saskatchewan.

We actually did the radio show from inside the Ruby Restaurant -- not the one at Rouleau but on the set at the Canada-Saskatchewan soundstage in Regina.

Sitting in a booth at the Ruby, microphone and makeshift studio spread out on the arborite table, it was surreal.

This is the most authentic knock-off of every small-town coffee shop you've ever seen. From the Vico dispenser to the recreated artificial pastries and dainties in the glass case, the faux Ruby is eerily realistic.

As a fan of Corner Gas, this radio adventure was a blast. We chatted with creator/writer/director Brent Butt. Completely devoid of airs and self-importance, Butt sets the example for cast and crew alike.

He's still the same laconic, "humour in all things" laidback guy he was in the early stand-up comedy days of Saskatoon in the 1980s. But now, as the franchise player in Canada's No. 1-rated sitcom, he has the quiet, take-charge approach of a seasoned executive producer.

We talked Corner Gas with cast and crew and took listeners' calls with a range of stars beginning with Saskatchewan natives Butt, Janet Wright and Eric Peterson, who play Brent's parents Emma and Oscar.

We also visited with cast members Nancy Robertson (Wanda), Tara Spencer-Nairn (officer Karen Pelly) and Cavan Cunningham, the mayor of Dog River.

Butt's business partner, executive producer David Storey, describes the production of Corner Gas as one of the best projects he's ever been associated with and tells of how relationships forged in six years have enabled this cast and crew to have as much fun behind the cameras as in front.

While the entire cast and crew were friendly, gracious and generous, top ratings went to Vancouverite Fred Ewanuick, who plays Brent's dull friend Hank.

Ewanuick, clearly no fool -- although he plays one well -- admits to sharing Hank's virtually childlike sense of honesty and discovery.

Engaging, funny and a serious Vancouver Canucks hockey fan, Ewanuick also has a split B.C. Lions-Saskatchewan Roughrider football allegiance and is fanatical about golf, which he took up only four years ago and does pretty well.

Like the rest of the people we met, Ewanuick is absolutely without pretension and the phone lines lit up with fans wanting to visit with this much-loved Corner Gas character.

The radio show was over too soon. Just like Corner Gas.

- - -

So what do you do when someone steals your property and you're catching them in the act?

Ask Jennifer Wright, founder of Green Shift Inc., an environmental education and consulting company that provides advice on how to incorporate green strategies and practices.

Just before the federal Liberal party unveiled its carbon tax proposal under the name "Green Shift," Wright told them she had been using the name corporately for seven years, had a pending trademark registration and didn't want a political party to appropriate her business name.

Bigger than Wright and with Liberal lawyers galore, the party of Stephane Dion ignored her -- she told me it was like being steamrolled.

So as the owner of any other brand or trademark would, Wright has sued the Liberals, prompting Dion to call the lawsuit "deplorable."

There are many words to describe someone defending their property and stopping a theft in progress. Deplorable generally wouldn't be one of them.

- - -

Three cheers for the state of Washington, which is targeting the dreaded left-lane idiot.

In Saskatchewan, divided highways bear the sign "slower traffic keep right" (sure, as if any man alive will admit that he's going slower than anyone else) and in some other places the message is "keep right except to pass."

But in Washington, this message is being backed up by a highway safety law that makes it "a traffic infraction to drive continuously in the left lane of a multi-lane roadway when it impedes the flow of other traffic."

In other words, the left lane of a divided highway and freeway is to be used for its intended purpose -- passing. And drivers must stay in the right lanes unless they're passing another vehicle.

Beyond keeping traffic moving more smoothly it also helps diffuse potential road rage breakouts.

Gormley can be heard Monday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on NewsTalk 650

http://www.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoenix/news/story.html?id=d080d45b-8421-4ebf-b390-58a0d038b490

.

Radio station's plan for Canadian content
means big bucks, air play and a CD spot

By KELLY DOODY
CalgarySun.com
Friday June 27, 2008

Firing up a new radio station nowadays can't be easy. The number of FM stations dotting the dial in Calgary is closing in on the number of Tim Hortons' locations in the northeast industrial parks.

But that's not the only battle for newbie stations. Being granted a spot on the airwaves from the radio gods at the CRTC also means your play list must contain a hefty amount of Canadian content, and that you plan to kick in a significant amount of dough to fund the development of local music.

The alt-rockers at Calgary's X92.9 made meeting such requirements one step harder on themselves by incorporating a much-welcomed No-Nickelback clause. Which means rather than drown their listeners in the sounds of Chad Kroeger's constipated voice to help fill their Canadian quota, X92.9 is forced to come up with something else. And since it had to be Canadian, they chose to make it local. For the second year in a row, X has cast their net far and wide and invited local bands big and small to send in their demos. The station then whittled all the entries down to five amazing bands, and cemented their picks onto this year's edition of the Xposure CD.

"We really wanted to give the expanding Calgary music scene a forum," said Fraser Tuff, co-host of The Show from 6 to 10 a.m. "We picked five winners for Xposure, but in all honesty there were 30 bands that deserve to be heard not just here but all over Canada."

For 2008 Xposure bands Kilbourne, Secret Broadcast, The Fast Romantics, The Summerlad and Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, winning meant walking away with $15,000, playing in front of thousands at Virgin Fest, a huge amount of air play, landing three songs on the Xposure CD and performing at the official CD release concert July 22 at Snatch Rock n' Roll Lounge -- a huge bash hosted by 24 Hours. Headlining the big night will be Attack in Black and The Stills. Tickets go on sale today for $15 at ticketmaster.ca, with all proceeds going to support The Back Door charity.

http://calsun.canoe.ca/News/Alberta/2008/06/27/6002931-sun.html

.
