So did everyone catch the HNIC Anthem show Saturday night. Some interesting choices there. Gary Mosby's song I thought was abit over the top. I quite liked the composition by the 13 year old Toronto boy until the theme penned by a couple of Quebec guys was played. Hands down winner. Go to http://www.cbc.ca and you'll find the 5 anthems there.
BTW, no I don't work for the Mother Corp, just tired of reading about 104.9fm and doing my bit to create some new threads to get it off this board...
There's a whole bunch of controversy around this contest. One of the 5 finalists has worked with Bob Rock before, they chose the 5 finalists before the deadline for submissions, they stated they would announce 200 finalists then changed that to 5 with no explanation...the list goes on and on and on.
There was a huge thread on the CBC anthem site that just got deleted because many of the 15,000 people that entered are outraged at what happened with this contest. There's still lots to read about it here...
I like 2 and 4, 2 is a Burnaby, BC Submission. 5 has the pipes at the end. Tough choice.
"Voting for the final two Anthems begins the evening of October 9th, and the winning Anthem will be revealed on Hockey Night in Canada on October 11th"
If I had to pick one, I would pick # 4. Having said that, they're all quite similar in orchestration, give or take a bagpipe or two (#5). Maybe whatever anthem they pick will come to be regarded as highly as the theme that got away, but we'll have to wait several years to see if the public acceptance ever gets that high.
I'd do a write in vote for the intro to EA Spots NLH 98 for the Playstation 1. The last great cartoony hockey vid game for, well.... twisted up up swing jocks after finishing at midnight that don't take it seriously. EA Sports started 'sim' stuff after that cutting out all the cartoonish impossible moves and generally all the fun.
Well worth hooking up the PS1 to watch the intro. Freaking great. And of course...it is on YouTube.
#2 & #4 are okay with me. But none of the entries really shine like the old one. I wonder if I'll feel the same way after a full season of the new tune, whatever it is.
a colleague at work raised a good point. With CBC likely to lose the rights to HNIC when the current contract runs out in 5 yrs, it opens the door for CTV/TSN to outbid the Mother Corp, bringing the theme back together with the program.
Hey if CBC can lose the rights to the Olympics, ANYTHING is possible.
None of the five themes do it for me. I think instead of a contest they should have gone to anyone of the folks who write themes for other CBC productions or perhaps gone to a Randy Bachman and said compose something catchy and edgy. The CBC seems to be continually fumbling on this entire process.
Not suprised by Colin Oberst (#5) - it was my pick all the way - the bagpipes stick in your head - as a matter of fact, it was the only one that stuck in my head out of the first five...
So now. Do you think the Mothercorp will remember to buy the rights to the song for a long time or will the bureaucrats have another contest in two years to do this all over again?
My guess another theme will be done in a year or two with little fanfare and it will probably have the same sound as the CBC Sports intro or the CBC Olympics intro.
The only way this theme will sound better is if the video is re-tooled. I find the new theme and the existing video don't work together (at least as seen in what CBC provided on their website). Anyone agree/disagree?
I find parts of "Canadian Gold" sound a bit like the theme to "Dallas." I even did a comparison on the air and asked my listeners, all who called agreed. Try it on your show.
"It's CBC Hockey Night In Dallas with play-by-play from JR & Bobby Ewing!"
I think what annoys me the most of this whole situation is the CBC showing how little they care about the audience...the same audience who absolutely FREAKED when TSN purchased the song.
If you're TRULY embarrassed over what happened and want to apologize to your audience, then SHELL OUT THE MONEY to pay royalties to an actual composer. Someone legitimate...someone professional.
No, instead they're going to offer 100-grand to ANYONE and turn it into some ratings-grab contest???????? 100-Grand? Are you KIDDING me? That's a FRACTION of what the song is actually worth, in terms of royalties. And the whole gimmick is sponsored, so they're making money off that, too.
I dunno, maybe I don't know enough, but to me...as a somewhat-layperson....it just REEKS of the CBC taking the cheap, easy way out and saying a big "F*** You!" to their loyal audience.
Watching the Canucks on TSN tonight they opened with the original HNIC theme. The theme did not miss a beat nor did it sound out of place. Another dumb move by CBC.
