From Castanet.....

                                               Liz McKinney jumps ship
by Kelly Hayes
Castenet.net
Sep 15, 2008

The Juice is tapping into the local talent pool.

The Juice (103.9) is one of two radio stations set to launch in Kelowna.

Programmer, Jason Mann, says the Juice has persuaded Liz McKinney of Power 104 to jump ship. She will anchor the Juice's morning show along with her sidekick named Moose.

His real name is Trevor Stoyko who is coming from Grand Prairie, Alberta.

McKinney says it was time for a change.

"I'm looking forward to a new challenge. It's an incredible opportunity, one that that I've never been involved with and that is the launching of a brand new station."

The Juice's morning show will be called McKinney and Moose on The Juice.

Power 104 Programming Director, Bob Mills, says McKinney will be missed.

"We wish her the very best."

The MD & PM drive will be handled by Jason Stone.

The Juice's Programming Director, Jason Mann, says having McKinney on board was a real coup.

"I've always been a big fan of Liz McKinney. She's quite a talent."

Mann is still working on a launch date for his new radio station.

The other Kelowna radio station, spearheaded by former Kelowna mayor Walter Gray, is also set to launch very soon.

Cool - I went to broadcasting college with Trevor Moose - he's gonna be great.

What a score to get Jason Stone - one of the hardest working, creative, fun and brightest up and comers - he'll do well as well...

from the reports we've received, The Juice will play Classic Hits and covers the best of the 80s, 90, and now. Jason Mann was reported to have said the station is targeted specifically for men and women 25-54 years of age, however the format has been described to super serve those between 30-49 who grew to learn and love Top 40 and rock music of the 80's, but the format is kept 'fresh' with the inclusion of compatible music from the 90s and now.

Hey...you're welcome.  When I was MD at Sun-fm in Duncan, an insane amount of music that we were playing was from my own music collection.  And when Vista got a new station they would use hard drives from Duncan to load up the station with music.  We were all wav not mp3's so it made sense (many of the stations they took over were mp3...a battle I'm very proud to have won).  I'm only guessing that practise hasn't changed.  If you listen close enough (and if they are still using Duncan's stuff and why wouldn't they?) you may even hear a crackle and pop because some of the really rare cancon stuff came off some of my vinyl (cleaned up as best I could...)

I think it's kinda of cool to know that my music collection (and me only wanting wav and not mp3 for on-air) is still having an effect through out Vista.  So even if I'm no longer with the company...I'm still there in one way or another.

AC caught you on Crave today Zane. Good call on the music uploads all those long hours of stepping up the music rotation(library) files will be cranked (Juiced) in Kelowna. I can just imagine all the play on juiced lines coming to K-town. Looks like the two new stations will fight for top spot.  100% Freshly Squeezed.

Kelowna's Juice being the  wine, is not the first moniker to hit the air.
They have one in the UK.

Carl Hughes plays Juice in the UK!

Juice FM - Liverpool's More Music Station. Music Radio for a Fun, Young Liverpool. Other online stations using the ORANGE flavor style like Vista. I would have gone red.

AC says get the right image for Juice, the station could go to the top. They need to create a character voice to make this juice concept fly. The branding must be real with a JUICE character. People in the area will get the connection. Otherwise you are just another FM. Should be interesting to see what they do with it. Can they pull it off?  Will  it be Kelowna's Flavor radio station? Or will it overflow with no zip?

Remember back in the day when the challenge was to introduce new music to your audience? Nowadays, we just trod out the tried and true and call the packaging and the label imaginative. Once in a while, we do introduce a new song, but only after repeated video, tv or commercial exposure.

These are exciting days for radio indeed.

Liz McKinney joins “Moose” (Trevor Stoyko)

Natalee Taylor is squeezing up mid days

The format is really meant to super serve those aged 30-49 who grew up listening to Top 40 and rock music of the 80s but the format is kept ‘fresh’ by including compatible music from the 90s and 2000s.”

It is a shame that yet another station has launched without recognizing the importance of having a website from day one!

Vista needs to get that higher on the priority list in their launch plans.  Look at the Free-FM site in GP.  Still don't have it right and it is well over a year.

With a company that size, they could easily crack a deal with a service if they are incapable of maintaing decent sites with internal people.  Isn't Kelowna the IT Slacker capital of Canada?  Tons of people writing code in their basements and working cheap.

Liz McKinney needs somebody to interact with to sound entertaining...long gone are The FOX solo shows. Her and John Michaels were the funniest duo in Kelowna ever...John owned the dialect in the show and out-witted her constantly...but they knit perfectly. (yes John knits!)  Not sure who this Moose dude is, but she can and will bury him if he doesn't get some balls early.

Maybe it would be best if they tried to out-shout each other. Apparently I'm the only one that didn't think it was a reasonable expectation that co-hosts compete against each other for attention.

I was naive enough to think they were on the same team.

I love people who say things like this. It's the same as people who blame the labels for signing bands like Nickleback and claim there is some huge conspiracy that makes people buy bad music.

God what tripe!

If stations like this get huge ratings (Joe/Bob/Jack/EZ Rock) then obviously it's because people like it.

But let me guess, they only like it because corporate radio uses magical brain wave controllers to make people like it. Right?

Ug.

Actually..... you have totally misunderstood my point, but thanks for trying to read my mind.. A mentalist, you are not.

For the benefit of Mr. Kreskin here, I'll try to clarify.

Whether or not people like Nickelback is irrelevant here. I am simply stating that the dinosaurs among us (and there are plenty) are quick to note how in the "good ole days" when radio was great, the jocks picked their music, corporate formats were non-existent, and the true artistic creativity and musical foresight of the jock and music director combined to define a station to its listeners. To be the one that played the new songs first, presented to an anticipating audience using wit and personality was the way we defined our place in the market (and the way we won ratings). Rotation and the right presentation combined to define not only radio, but significant moments in listeners' lives. This ideal made radio great and is now sadly missing.

Most of the new stations mentioned in these threads focus a majority (if not entirely) upon playing music that we know all the words to. There is no mystery, there is little new music being played, we are just re-living the past for the benefit of the demographic segment with the most money. The appeal to the listener is understandable, the appeal to the sales team is equally understandable... but as programmers, entertainers and faceless voices in the dark, the execution is little more than phoning it in. The state of radio has sunk to the point that we are applauding our own stagnation. In fact, many of us believe that there is no longer new music that is worthwhile to our listeners, so we will continue to pacify them with the same stuff we think they are looking for.. and we praise each other for it.

New music stations do still exist, and if done right, they thrive.. in my opinion.. I will say that again, a little louder... IN MY OPINION.. pandering to the baby boomers (which is exactly what classic hits formats are doing) will leave us with nothing to give us relevance for the future. This will be our swan-song and we are playing the violin as Rome burns.

Who knows, but then again, Moose took a transfer within the same company, it's not like he was jumping ship to get from GP to K-Town.

I believe Jason Mann is the day to day head of operations for the Kelowna station.

Listening to the Cut Loose Moose you'd almost think he was given either a huge 'buh bye' cheque...or he's got some damn fine meds happening.  ok boys and girls it's time for a visual cartoon. Picture a pair of moose antlers on a man going across the parking lot to a car and Jason Mann sitting in his office looking out the window...and above in a thinking balloon is..."there, but for the grace of daddy go I"
Moose you sound like you've really got your shat together....you'll land on your hooves. Now Princess liz is John's problem.

Moose has his own flair... that obviously didn't click with McKinney.  He's more than sidekick material... he IS the show, wherever the show may be...  I guess it just didn't work for them as a team because they are both large personalities, and obviously have their own very different styles.

I would tune to any station to hear the slightly irreverant, yet hilarious styles of moosie in the morning!

Good luck in what I know is going to be a great future for you, Moose!
