I'm in radio now, but I'm really interested in TV. Ultimately, something like a morning show or even MTV. What's the best way to get into television?? |

TV is a whole other animal...I've only worked briefly in TV and it was all behind the scenes. But I would suggest, if you don't have any television training see if your local college/technical institute has anything for you. The other route you can go is talk to your local community rv station, see if you can get some face time on tv. Come prepared with a pitch for a weekly 3 minute feature you could do for them, something that relates to your current job...like music news or a concert calendar...Best of luck! |

Network... network... network...
Everyone I know who has made the leap from radio to TV has done it as a result of having made close personal relationships away from work and capitalizing on the opportunities when they come up. |

Great answer on the "networking" front. I remember doing a golf event once and there happened to be a TV person in the crowd. That's how I got into it.
Many people have decent cameras now (you can also rent them). Grab a camera person, do some "street stuff" and practice. Radio experience is great because you learn how to think on your feet. |

If you're looking at being "on air talent", and you have a television face with a radio voice your best bet to get "working video" of yourself is to volunteer at your local cable company to host a show, or be a reporter with them - compile a tape (DVD) with your "talent" profile and apply at commercial TV stations. Even if you're going into the technical side (where I from), and haven't ever been there, and haven't gone to college - do it all at your cable company. |

I started volunteering at a Shaw cable station (no college courses at all), was hired as a shooter part time in 2 months, then learned how to edit, was working full time hours 4 months after that, eventually did reporter and anchor gigs. Worked in cable, and network tv for 7 years after that.
Cable stations are the fastest way to learn, as you are actually doing it from day 1. But I will say that it is much easier to break in on the technical side (camera, edit, switcher etc.,) as everyone wants to be "on" tv.
Just start there, and eventually an opportunity will come up (someone sick, on vacation, doesn't like the story,) and then just be prepared to jump in even before someone asks.
Good luck!!!! |

Yeah, I'd recommend cable too. That's where I started. Also know a lot of people in media today that started at Cable:
2 tv news directors 2 tv news producers tv news editor radio reporter newspaper reporter several tv reporters several tv technical
Most (including myself), did get some formal education but cable got us started.... _______________________________________________________________ Staying in bed shouting, oh God! Does not constitute going to church.
