This one slipped by me.  

CTV is asking the CRTC for permission to Launch CFCN Calgary into the Digial/HDTV Age.

We also need one in Edmonton...CFRN was the first station in here, it should be the first HD station too.

I doubt CTV could give a damn about CFRN... I would bet my money on CBC or Global beating CTV in the HD race in Edmonton...

if a station, especially a station that broadcasts for free over the air is willing to go through the expenditure of upgrading to an HD signal, just let them do it...no application into the CRTC. In this day and age this is the equivilant of making stations apply to broadcast in colour.

I think in these cases, it simply is to verify the technical information......

Yeah, they're basically rubber-stamped -- but it is actually a new signal on a new channel so the process needs to at least appear to be there.
