I listened to a lot of news on Calgary AM and FM radio between 6 and 8:20 this morning. All reported the Maple Leaf Meats recall story and every news-reader told us we should toss any Maple Leaf meat products from our fridges. Clearly no one bothered to check the Food Inspection Agency's website widely reported on TV last night and in the papers this morning.  They'd have seen that recalled brands include Schneider's, Deli Gourmet, Mr. Sub, Burns, McDonald's and others packaged by Maple Leaf. Given the easy access to the entire story, is 1 brand name out of 7 good reporting?    http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2008/20080819e.shtml

I'm surprised that an "oldpro" couldn't backwards engineer a URL.

CLARIFICATION - HEALTH HAZARD ALERT
CERTAIN READY-TO-EAT DELI MEAT PRODUCTS PRODUCED AT ESTABLISHMENT 97B MAY CONTAIN LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES
Related Alerts: 2008-08-17 | 2008-08-19 | 2008-08-21

OTTAWA, August 21, 2008 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) would like to clarify some information on the recall of the 23 ready-to-eat deli meat products produced at Establishment #97B, which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Some reports indicate that the 23 products involved in this recall carry Best Before dates ranging from September 30 to January 1, 2009, or indicate only a single Best Before date; such coding information is not accurate.

The products involved in this recall include those bearing all Best Before dates up to and including the dates indicated in the list of affected products on the CFIA website. The CFIA is advising the public to carefully review the list of affected products, and identify Best Before dates on a product-by-product basis.

The alert had noted that these products may also be sold at retail and deli counters. Since at such locations the original product identity and Best Before code may not be evident, consumers who may have a concern with their deli meat products are advised to check with their retailer to determine if the purchase contained the recalled products.

For more information, consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

For information on Listeria monocytogenes, visit the Food Facts web page at http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/fssa/concen/causee.shtml.

For information on receiving recalls by e-mail, or for other food safety facts, visit our web site at http://www.inspection.gc.ca

Maybe you weren't listening close enough...660 News reported this morning that several other brands were affected and referred listeners to their website for a complete list...not sure if it's still there, but it was this morning.

We're talking about two to three days ago though.  It's easy enough for on-air staff to come to PSR (because we know they do) and read this thread within the last 48 hours and get a better handle on what they should be reporting.  And I am not pointing that at any news folks in particular.  Dialing back to three days ago, it would not have been difficult to do 5 minutes of extra research to summarize within 10 seconds what's on the list and what's not and which brands are effected.

Ya, I love how they assume we are all at home near a computer, and not say, driving or something. Lazy reporters.

So you're saying that if they mentioned the name of every single product that was affected you would remember them all and make a mental list to avoid them...all while driving? You've got talent, my friend.

News takes time to come out I guess--- especially when the company expands the recall list by 10 times, days late.
Went into my supermarket today and asked " how do I know if any of the stuff at this deli counter comes from Maple Leaf?"
Answer--Oh no- this is all Schneiders.
Response---well Schneiders is owned by Maple Leaf----so?
Blank stares, nothing, nada.
It's an information gap from the company end or CFIA
Don't shoot the messenger

My personal opinion...and I am entitled to that! Is i think the consumer has to be somewhat responsible! With over 220 products recalled there is no way to get that into a 30-60 news story! But on the other hand it is very easy for the "News reporter/anchor" to mention "by the way the Maple Leaf recall also includes Schinders and Burns".
