Newcap's CFCW in Camrose is seeking a move from 790am to 840am for restoration of service for listeners in North-Central Alberta

Will seem weird not having CFCW on 790 as they have for the past 40 years....

Is this a round-about way to entice the CRTC to approve their Wainwright-AM and Athabasca-AM to FM?  The application says that 840 would be impossible to be sought out by anyone else in the North America, since Wainwright's at 830 and Athabasca at 850.  They claim they are allowed to apply cuz [paraphrased] 840 is in between their own stations...which have applied to go FM.  In other words, if the CRTC says no to Wainwright and Athabasca's switches, they have to say no to CFCW-AM.

I just can't believe that 840 would be the only allowable frequency on the dial.  Good positioning and argument though by the boys and girl at Newcap.

Given the demo for your average CFCW listener (60 to dead).  I can't help but wonder if and when CFCW changes to 840AM, that some mass confusion breaks out among the listeners.

Much like back in 2001 when CKRM/Regina switched from 980 to 620,  I remember reading on the net that many CKRM listeners were completely dumbfounded and some were down right irate by the frequency switch.  The only real difference here being, Regina had a station on 620 while Edmonton never had a station on 840.  It should be interesting!

Well, that's going to be interesting.
That would wipe out 850, but 830 especially since they're both south east of Edmonton, so directional antennas won't help there. Sigh.

On the flipside, maybe they'll finally change whatever equipment they are using that is causing the audio signal to be very narrow, bandwidth wise (even on the internet streaming feed!)

I guess the trend is to change all of their stations to FM though - if 830 CKKY goes FM, and CKWY-FM is any indication, their coverage area will be reduced from what it is now. If that goes through, what's left, 95.5 CKGY-FM? Sporadic coverage.

OK, Newcap, I love your stations, but whatever you do now, don't move CKDQ anywhere.
