Bruce Allen cleared courtesy CKNW(AM980) 7/16/2008 'He was the author of his own misfortune.' That conclusion was reached in a 20-page decision reprimanding CKNW editorialist Bruce Allen. After reviewing racially-charged statements made last September, the Canadian broadcast standards council has ruled the Canadian Association of Broadcaster’s code of ethics was --not-- breached when Allen said immigrants who do not want to follow Canadian laws should return to their native country. The council determined his comments were not abusive or unduly discriminatory, but they could be construed as arrogant, ignorant and offensive. Allen was also admonished for mistakenly believing there were no limits to his right to broadcast his opinions...and making erroneous statements. The panel went on to applaud CKNW for taking 'extraordinary steps to respond quickly and thoughtfully' by writing letters to all 176 complainants, as well as meeting with members of communities offended by the comments. |
