BC Liberals Carbon Tax Adverts = 1 Hell of an Expensive pile of B.S.
That’s right.
Laila Yuile Freelance writer and author
Gordon Campbell and his Liberal party members have a helluva lot of explaining to do. I’m talking about those two page ads in every paper. The glossy, dramatic television spots on various local channels. You know the ones…..
” The Okanagan Firestorms of 2003, ( dramatic clip of firestorm ), flooding in Prince George” ( the winter floods in PG) , and so on and so forth…. the gist of the ads is to blatantly push this wonderful carbon tax we have, and how BC is going to be the most proactive at addressing climate changes through reduced emissions. Like somehow all the emissions we have produced globally contributed to some sort of climate change that fostered the above mentioned natural disasters.
Excuse my language, but what a load of shit!!! How stupid does Gordon Campbells PR entourage think we all are? Pretty damn stupid, I’m guessing.
Let me refresh your memories and educate you on why these ads are so ridiculous.
Here is a link to the provincial report on the Okanagan Firestorm of 2003. Take a moment to read it.
Hmmm. No where in this report on the fire does it mention climate change or global warming as a reason for the severity of the fire that was started with a lightening strike- not an uncommon occurrence in the interior. What DID make this firestorm so severe? The lack of appropriate forest management and human encroachment/ interference. Fires are a natural part of a forest life, and are crucial to removing the scrubby undergrowth of the forest that can act as fuel for a fire. For years, the forest ministry had not allowed any controlled burns to be done AND successfully suppressed any smaller fires that may have started. These two factors successfully created an overgrowth of scrub on the forest floor, and created a situation ripe for a the events of 2003.
In effect, the governments own policies created the perfect situation for this massive ,destructive fire. Woulda ,Coulda, Shoulda- but didn’t. Not global warming, not climate change, no, in fact we did it to ourselves.
Now, lets talk about the Prince George flood this past winter. For one thing, as someone who grew up there, let me tell you that ice jams happen every year. They don’t often get as bad as this one, but this too was not a situation that in any way can be attributed to global warming, or any other climate change. In fact, Moron Campbell, oops, sorry, Gordon Campbell even said in a clip I saw on the news during his little sympathy trip to the interior, that it must be because of the beetle killed trees that cannot suck up any extra water because they were dead. Does he even know how many people laughed in PG over that one? Nope, this was not due to beetle kill trees either, it was once again mismanagement through government and municipal policies.
Although not widely talked about- God knows politicians dont like to talk about their f***-ups - there has been a battle going on between environmentalists trying to save fish habitat, and those who are in charge of the river.Back in the day, it used to be that when the silt and gravel in the river that was brought downstream built up so much that the depth of the river dropped, they would dredge the river. Its done down here in the Fraser all the time. However, over the years, protecting potential fish spawning habitat suddenly became more important than keeping the silt and gravel under control ,and the dredging stopped. What happened? Of course, the buildup became so great that this year the ice jam became impassable. And this is all without factoring the Alcan contribution to it, which is yet another government screw-up….( Lets talk to the Liberals about Alcan too) …… Think they might go back to dredging now? Policy, politics and mismanagement, pure and simple .
And so, you can see why I have to laugh at these smarmy ads that push this instance in our faces as proof we need this tax. These” disasters” weren’t a result of global warming, or global cooling, or any kind of climate change at all. They were government mismanagement’s, pure and simple. Costly ones, at that.
I would be remiss to talk about how much these ads are costing us all as taxpayers. TV spots aren’t cheap, and these ads are running several times an hour during prime time. Two page ads in provincial dailies? Astronomical. Yes, this Carbon tax is saving us so much, I can just add it all up.
Gordon, If this gets back to you, I would like to know something. Why the lies? Are you hoping that enough time has passed that no one will remember the real details behind those two disasters? Are you so desperate to have people embrace this tax that you must resort to tactics that equate to fear mongering?
Quit wasting our money on your personal agendas. Carbon Tax? This whole spectacle is a farce,Premier, a sham of the greatest proportions, and I believe it will come to an end - not unlike your time as our fair leader.
you do realize when this was all formulating for British Colubmia. It was when Gordon Campbell and his caucus were flown down to Sacramental, California one year ago, wined and dined by the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. Before they left the California Capital, they were given a "Blue-Print" from Arnie on how to implement and impose the "Global Warming" scam upon the people of British Columbia.
I believe British Columbia is the test "pilot ' to see how us peons overwhelmingly accept the lie without question.
Arnie says he would love to be Obama's energy and environment czar "He [Obama] admires California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's [climate-change czar] approach to the environment," the Newsweek
In an age of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act. - George Orwell
Oh how I enjoy these little walks down memory lane. Sam, thanks for the enlightenment. Is this a case of Gordon Campbell wanting to be first past the post on climate change? I fear this is all about Gordon and to hell with the electorate. We shall see.....
We are all being "greenmailed" by the constant and invasive adverts from our government and it's shills. If a lie is told often enough, and with enough sincerity, does it become the truth? Revenue Neutral, my a**. Taking funds from one pocket and putting them into different pockets (including of course, handling charges) is just plain stupid. The tax is on CONSUMPTION - the tax breaks are on INCOME. Ask a truck driver what his tax break is. Ask a retired person living on a part or fully fixed income from a pension. Do our politicians actually know any low income people? Do they know what living from paycheque to paycheque is really like? Counting pennies (until they are taken out of circulation)! All they talk about is a benefit to low income folk. Do they actually know any? Me thinks not!
I read with interest our own MLA's half page ad in the local paper on Sunday extolling the virtues of the carbon tax and how THE LAW makes it revenue neutral. The law also makes drinking and driving a crime, but our premier seems to have sidestepped that one - I guess, like his green tax, if it happens outside this province, it doesn't count (airlines, ships and cross border trucking all exempt)! The interesting thing about this half page piece is that it tows the party line for the first few paragraphs, and then begins to discredit the NDP and whatever their policy may be regarding the greening of our province for the rest of the page.
I for one could care less what the NDP think about the greenery! When the rubber hits the road come next election time, then I will care about the various parties' stand on this and other issues. For now, we are not interested in discrediting the NDP - no, we are looking to discredit the government of the day and their serious mismanagement of our province. If Gordon Campbell and the Liberals can keep the pot boiling on this one issue, imagine what can be done behind our collective backs? Democratic Dictatorship!!!! And please do not forget that the GAG law was also passed at the same time as this piece of legislation. Nobody is talking about that! See how things can fall to the back of the stove?
Well, I for one am still a great believer in the free market system - which seems to have worked very well indeed of late. Spiraling costs at the pump have done more to spur on conservation that any tax could possibly do. To my way of thinking, a sensible, thoughtful public will always eventually react correctly when given knowledge and economic pressure. And that is where this government made a serious mistake. Education, not Legislation! Give me food for thought and trust I will react in the right manner for me, my family, my community and ultimately, my world.
And therein lies the crux of this whole argument regarding yet another tax. Do they think I cannot make the decision to reduce, and recycle without being legislated to do so? Do Gordon Campbell and his Liberals think they can actually change the laws of nature? Oh please.....
One last item if you please. Exactly where is my 2.34 cents per litre going? What tangible, results driven program is now in effect? Free cloth grocery bags with every fill?
I wasn't in the room but Bertrand Russel once opined "if 50 million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing". Are you listening Arnie, er, I mean Gordo?
