Personally, I think it is the exact right move for them, as another poster had mentioned, in recent years they had lost some focus with adding the 90's grunge tunes and lost some share as a result.  It wasn 't going to have an impact if they just stopped playing that stuff, they needed a method to tell people about it and I think this move achieves that.  Also from what I understand most classic rock fans in Edmonton kept calling the station K-97 anyway so it makes sense

Rebranding to K-97 is a solid idea, but that logo is terrible.  I don't get it at all.  Isn't that shape a play on highway signs in the US?  Or even worse, a deputy badge?  How is that relevant to Edmonton?  I grew up in Edmonton, and there is no signifigance to that shape that I can see.  Please, correct me if I am missing something.

There is a ton of classic K-97 logo's out there from the past.  Why not use one of those?  Maybe even rehash "The Spirit Of Edmonton" sell line.  Instead, generic "Classic Rock, K-97".  If you are going to live in the past including long promo's about how Terry started in 1986....why not go all the way?

Maybe they'll bring back the foreground feature "Focus 97" at 10:30am weekdays with Sharon Mallon.

I could be wrong but I thought it was supposed to be a take on the Harley-Davidson logo, or at least that's what it made me think of, which seemed to fit with classic rock.

WHAT THE HELL!!!! K-Rock......K-97.....Who cares!!! Just you groupies, not the listener, he or she won't even notice........What matters is what comes out of the radio.....What is wrong?....3 songs an hour, Terry (I LOVE my voice) Evans, Melissa Wright telling me (while holding her nose), how drunk she got last night.

I could be wrong, but I think it's an "Oil Can" logo. the OIlers had one on the shoulders of their third jerseys a couple of years ago.

I liked the old morning show WAY better. Nothing besides shuffling a few people around, yet people still call in saying "Glad to have K-97 Back"?? What's with these people?

They only did that because they had to under c.r.t.c. regs. You'll never hear that again.

Lipstick, meet pig.

Honestly... I don't get Newcap's "heritage" moves.  Part of me believes that while brands are important, there's also a truth to the fact that people just don't care all that deeply about radio.

If heritage meant anything, IBM would still be cranking out home personal computers, Eatons would still be around, and the big three auto makers would be riding high in the face of competition from imports.

Sunspot sitckers, heritage call letters, and classic contests -- they're all things that make radio geeks get warm and fuzzy inside.  Average folks just don't care that deeply.

At the end of the day, it's not what you call yourself... it's what you put on the air that matters most.

as any change comes along, i wish the best for everyone at the station. when everyone wins, well, everyone in the business wins. i also have to agree with canuckkid in this re-branding being all but superficial. the only time i've ever heard (or had) a conversation about radio with an average listener is when they knew i or someone i know works in the business. maybe i don't hang out in the right sampled crowds... jk

re-brand or not, cirk deserves better numbers and i hope this is the tsn turning point.

That shape is 100% US highway sign...think Route 66.  I fail to see the connection with Edmonton or classic rock.

On the other hand, I think the move to re-brand as K-97 may be the smartest move ARG has made in a while.  Will it win them points in the book?  That remains to be seen, but unless you improve what's coming out of the speakers, a new logo & imaging isn't going to help much.  (Remember 95 Crave?)

Good luck to K-97, I hope this is just the beginning.

Bitter because you can't get work, wireless? Do you really think these people are mindless fucks? They've spent more than guys like us will make in 4 or 5 years just on research for this. And yes, people still do care. As they get older, they eat that nostalgia thing up. Like red sports cars when you are fifty.

The 95 Crave situation is much different.  In that siutation Z95 had The Beat come along and take the Top 40 position in the market which Z had previously been the sole owner of.  They decided to panic and do the god awful Crave thing which was a huge mistake, and now with Eric Samuels gone and Brad Phillips as GM I am sure it will be fixed.

In the case of K97/K-Rock ... What they were doing as K-Rock didn't match what the listeners wanted or expected from them.  They wanted classic rock and most still called the station K-97 .  As I said previously, it seemed the station had lost some focus and they were playing too much 90's rock (Metallica/RHCP/Pearl Jam etc.)   They are back to being a meat and potatoes classic rock station similar to Q107 Toronto or Rock 101 Vancouver.  I think the other changes are designed to reflect what they are doing on the air.
