Peter Mansbridge
appointed to
the Order of Canada

Tuesday, July 1, 2008
CBC News

Peter Mansbridge has had a 40-year career at the CBC, starting at age 19. (CBC)The CBC's Peter Mansbridge is to become an officer of the Order of Canada, according to a new list of 75 appointees released on Canada Day by Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean.

Mansbridge, the chief correspondent of CBC News, anchors the flagship nightly news program The National and also hosts Newsworld's Mansbridge One on One.

Born in London in 1948, the newsman — who turns 60 on Sunday — was educated in Ottawa and served in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1966 and 1967.

His career with the CBC began by chance when someone from the public broadcaster overheard him on the PA system at an airport in the town of Churchill, Man., where he was working for the airline Transair, and asked him to come work at the local radio station. He was 19.

Mansbridge was The National's reporter in Saskatchewan in 1975; one year later, he landed a position as a parliamentary correspondent in Ottawa. He became chief correspondent and anchor of The National in 1988.

In his 40 years with the public broadcaster, Mansbridge has received 12 Gemini Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism as well as a number of honorary degrees from universities across the country.

The Order of Canada is the country's highest civilian honour and recognizes lifetime achievement and service to the nation.

Recipients announced Tuesday are slated to receive their insignia at a later date, yet to be announced.

Anybody who can hold down a job for that length of time deserves at least something.

Isn't the Order of Canada reserved for heroes or somebody that made a difference? How is reading a teleprompter for the CBC worthy? Who's next? Alec Trebek?

I like to think being a news anchor for 40 years - telling compelling stories that affect the lives of Canadians is a pretty big deal and a service to the country or community they serve.  Are you saying that anyone that dedicates their life to news might as well become a game-show host because that is the level of importance they are?  Peter covered everything from Meech Lake to September 11th and before he was in news he served in the Canadian Navy.

You better recognize.

Lloyd got his just over a decade ago.  He wears his Order of Canada pin every night when he anchors the news.  Perhaps Kevin Newman will get one by default.

Please forgive my ignorance re: Lloyd. I still don't think a news anchor is worthy of such an honour. Frank magazine, (remember Frank?) always referred to anchors as 'Bingo Callers' and for good reason. A team of writers has their copy loaded in a teleprompter, a director cues the floor director and he cues the anchor who in turn reads it. Not exactly Banting and Best discovering Insulin here. Yes, Peter is very good as is Lloyd. So is Kevin Newman, Ian Hanomansingh, Sandi Renaldo and well you get the picture. Then again, Bobby Curtola, Steve Smith(Red Green) and Ben Johnson all have one so I suppose Peter should have one too.

Trebek is scheduled to receive one in the fall of 2010, earlier if his show does well on CBC.
