Vista Radio is very excited to make public their proposed application for a brand new country music radio station to serve Vernon - Vernon Country.

We know there is a need for a country music station in the north Okanagan and Vistas research has proven that.

We are looking for your written support for the application for Vernon Country as it will promote country music and artists, while assisting up and coming country music artists by:

   1. Committing to 40% Canadian Music more than the regulated 35%%
   2. Airing independent country artists 4 times per day to assist in having their music heard
   3. Significant Canadian Talent Development Pledge to FACTOR

Wasn't Rogers just trying to sell their Vernon stick (before the CRTC wouldn't let Pattison)?  Will the CRTC really give another station to Vernon?  Why wouldn't Vista just cough up the 4 million bucks that Pattison was going to give Rogers?

First off would Rogers want to sell to Vista? Anyway, If I had 4 million I would buy myself EVEN 2 million and finance the rest.  Vista has there stick in every new calling for applications. They have a huge cash fund to draw from to build the empire. The way it works is to hammer a deal out with Rogers, then it gets reviewed bY CRTC.

Rogers could give Vista the middle finger. Just because they can.

Do they really?  How can you be sure of this?

Just wondering.

Goes like this. Ms. Margot M. Micallef, Q.C. is the President of Oliver Capital Partners, a company she founded in 2003 through which Ms. Micallef provides M & A Advisory and Corporate Finance services.

Ms. Micallef is Chair and CEO of Vista Broadcast Group, Chair of Vista,

1993 to 2003,  Micallef was the Senior Vice-President, Law, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Shaw Communications Inc.

Micallef was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 2002.

She is one smart cookie, has the connections to get all monies required.

As I said earlier in another forum

It's not very often that I do, but I have to add my two cents here.

I know for a fact that there are former Vista Employees who are still waiting for settlements in wrongful dismissal suits, yet Vista continues to spend thousands even millions of dollars on new licence applications, radio station aquisitions and the start up costs associated with getting a new licence. I'm not privy to the amount that each of the former employees is asking for, but I'll bet that it doesn't even come remotely close to what Vista has spent in the last year or so. I've been in this business for 30 years and have worked for some really great stations and some really crappy ones (haven't we all) I know some of these people who are in litigation with Vista and they deserve every penny they're asking for, but Vista's answer to them is to stall and spend thousands of dollars on thier own lawyer only to put off the inevitable and the sad part is that the former Vista employee probably won't see much of the settlement once they've paid for thier lawyer. What kind of company is that to work for? and tell me that's good business?

Vista preaches the fact that they are a "people first" company, I put it to them to put their money where their mouth is and give these former employees their setlements and MOVE ON.

I still don't get it.  I understand she may have the contacts...but that still doesn't mean the money will be there.  Who are the big players that you think she is getting all the money from.  Surely there has to be a cut off somewhere?  It can't be an endless bucket...can it?

Or maybe it's a case where all the stations they have are making enough money they don't have to go elsewhere...

I don't know...but it is fun to wonder...

The last line should help answer your question Zane (full article is on PSR as well).

VANCOUVER -- Some people think small. Others, such as Margot Micallef get hold of an idea and make it bigger, a tendency one friend describes as "adding zeros."

So, when friend and radio veteran Paul Mann asked her advice on his yen to buy a small-town radio station, maybe two, she thought 20 would be better.

"I said, 'Great idea, but you need to buy more than one station because it's really hard to lever off one station in a competitive environment," Ms. Micallef said during a recent swing through Vancouver.

She liked the concept enough to become a partner, operating on the premise that the new venture needed not only to build a multiple-station platform, but do it quickly.

And that's how, Ms. Micallef wound up as chief executive officer of Vista Radio Ltd. A Calgary-based lawyer, she had spent 10 years in the executive ranks of Shaw Communications Inc. before founding Oliver Partners Inc., which provides financing and merger and acquisition services to the communications sector.

Mr. Mann, who has worked on-air at stations in B.C. and Alberta, is executive vice-president of the privately held company.

Major shareholders include Ms. Micallef and Tim Hortons co-founder Ron Joyce.

Hank is bang on.  Ron Joyce who sold Tim Horton's for hundreds of millions owns 20%+ of Vista.  Ownership info is all publically available on the CRTC website.  So, money is no object to this group.  Sources peg the price paid for The Goat at over $7 million in Lloydminster for god's sake!  Not exactly a prime property.

Just to play devils advocate here I wouldnt say thats not prime... i mean any alberta property is worth the tag put on it ..and the goat is known nationally for churning out talent... I'd say 7 mil is a good investment.

There were 2 stations that were sold in that deal. 106.1 and  99.7. I've heard the Goat in Lloyd sells out completely on a regular basis, while the other Goat (launched in October) is already on the up and up sales wise, and is dominating the other 3 stations in the market. Lots of money to be made in the heart of oil country albertaradioguy, you should know that better than most.

I think if you actually listened to the baby goat in Bonnyville, you would know they are not up and up sales wise...and totally unlikely they dominate a market with much competition in the last few years.  If Vista paid 7 million...they over paid.

Disagree. The Goat brand is worth 7 million easy. A multi-award winning brand, recognized and respected the country over. Vista was smart to buy it, and the "baby Goat" can only get better from here....

If you listen to the competition, baby bonny goat is still ahead, despite.  Rawlco, NC, Harvard and Standard all had the opportunity to scoop these guys up over the years.  Good on vista (even though i'm not a fan....yet anyway.)  worth the price in 5 years.
