All the jox on air from the Rock? Eureka! If that's true, wIth a three and a half hour time difference Newcap has finally solved the age old problem of having to roll out of bed at three thirty for a five thirty wakeup shift! The Newfoundland based jocks dont have to be up and at it til well past sunrise on thier end! Brilliant! Speaking as a former "morning man with permanent bags under the eyes" let me say it's about time...so to speak.
All of the jocks are in Newfoundland. The news anchors are in Fort McMurray. I think only the morning guy was flown out to the Mac to actually see the city first hand.
I gotta call bullshit on that one... I may be wrong, but I believe that Brad the morning guy was recently at Newcap's the Rig in Whitecourt... It may be quite possible that they're broadcasting from one of Newcap's other studios in Alberta or quite possibly the coast as you say only until their studio is setup. But I think the CRTC was pretty adamant about having live announcers in the community.
Besides, from what I've seen, Newcap likes to be pretty aggressive in their competitive markets and they'd have to be to take down the heritage rock station in Fort Mac... Long term anyway.
Because in a market like McMurray, there is absolutely ZER0 reason why any of the major dayparts should be unlocal (6000km away), despite being VT'd. And Newcap lied to the CRTC straight up...again.
As for the studio arguement, it is fully finished and operational.
I could understand if they were trying to pull the whole "hey, we're in your home of Newfoundland, listen to us" kind of deal. But from all accounts, they're pretending like they're live in the Mac.
The thing is, they're not the only ones. Rogers VT's mid-days and even afternoons out-of-market.
I personally know two announcers at K Rock Ft. Mac; One is in St. John's and one does news from Ft. Mac. I agree with those who think all radio should be local at all times! Way to prove yourself to the community Newcap!
It's funny...this all sounds like a big joke huh? "Here's the idea...we'll have local-ish programming with jocks on the other side of the country"
Out of market voice tracking is bad enough, even if it's done from a few hours away...but across the nation is sad. I hope the weather network's Fort Mac page is immaculate! Might make it tough on the new station.
Perhaps they can't be bothered trying to hire on air staff who agree to live like college students. Everyone living together in dorm rooms because the cost of living in Fort Mac is so out of sight not to mention the cost of everything else. If you live in Fort Mac you better be making at least 50k bare minimum.

If they can't pay the staff that, then they shouldn't have applied for a licence. Who else elsewhere who on-air doesn't live like a college student?
That said, to Mike and someone else's point, if you are going to VT and not pull the "Newfies doing radio in Newf-filled town bla, bla", do it from as local (in this case Lac La Biche, Lloyd or Edm) as possible. (YUCK)
