TORONTO, June 16 /CNW/ - In an unprecedented effort to promote
environmental sustainability, the entire Global News organization is launching
"Global News Goes Green" on Friday, June 20th. In addition to covering the
day's major news stories, all Global News stations across the country are
dedicating their broadcasts on this day to key environmental issues and
eco-friendly topics, providing Canadians with ways to reduce their carbon
footprints.
"Environmental awareness is at its peak, and our 'Global News Goes Green'
initiative is to provide Canadians with the inspiration and knowledge to
protect the planet's delicate balance," said Troy Reeb, Global Television's
Vice-President of News. "The environment is an issue that concerns us all, and
as the country's news leader, we are committed to delivering news and
solutions that can make a positive impact on our world."
For "Global News Goes Green", all Global newscasts coast-to-coast will
focus on a wide variety of topics surrounding sustainable development
throughout their broadcasts including the Morning News, Noon News, Early News,
News Hour, Evening News, Prime News, News Hour Final and News Final in the
respective markets. The newscasts will deliver in-depth stories of ways to
help protect and conserve our planet, live expert interviews and success
stories of local heroes making a difference.

Below are some major stories from Global News:

     Global National
     ---------------
From the front lines of climate change, Global National concludes a
three-day special report from the Canadian Arctic on the 20th, examining one
of the most timely and controversial issues of today. Global National
investigates how changes to the environment have impacted the traditional way
of life for people of the north, their communities, the rest of Canada and the
world.

     Global News Ontario
     -------------------
Global News Ontario offers in-depth coverage of local sustainability
issues ranging from the state of Toronto's waterways for a growing population,
to what the next generation is doing to make the world more "green." Plus, the
News Hour goes live, on-location at a local Greater Toronto public school
where students, teachers and parents are making inroads in helping improve the
environment.

     Global BC
     ---------
Global BC's Morning News team broadcasts live from the shores of
Vancouver to examine how the city is keeping its beaches and shorelines clean.
Comprehensive coverage continues with stories ranging from unique British
Columbian inventions, to the extremes local residents will go to live an
eco-friendly life.

     Global News Calgary
     -------------------
Global News Calgary brings a two-part series on food waste reduction and
effective ways to save money and help the planet. The News Hour team
broadcasts live, on-location at a local landfill to investigate recycling
solutions and ways to reduce the amount of waste.

     Global News Edmonton
     --------------------
In addition to providing viewers with helpful environmental tips from its
news anchors, Global News Edmonton focuses on local stories including
Edmontonians using "green" household appliances, an in-depth look at whether
eco-friendly cleaners are really what they claim to be, and a
behind-the-scenes tour of the Global newsroom with energy-saving advice from
an environment expert.

     Global News Winnipeg
     --------------------
The Evening News takes to the open road, broadcasting live, on-location
at a clean energy producing wind farm in St. Leon, Manitoba. Here, the news
focuses on how members of a small, but modern community live simpler lives to
reduce their carbon footprint.

     Global News Regina
     ------------------
Global News Regina examines what the city is doing to meet its goal of
decreasing the level of greenhouse gas emissions and unique ways local
businesses and websites are reducing their impact on the environment.

     Global News Quebec
     ------------------
As part of its unique "My Planet" series, Global News Quebec takes its
Evening News broadcast on the road to a local Montreal school where students
are producing a news report on their eco-friendly initiatives.

I definitely wont be watching Global at all on Friday, or any other day they try to force something upon me!

The earth is going through natural cycles.. NOTHING WE CAN DO!

There are many other stories Global could focus on, instead of this Green crap.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING ITS GOING THROUGH A NATURAL CYCLE!

out of all the networks doing this hole global warming propaganda, The CW has it best... free to be green, so I guess I'm free not to buy in to this crap. We just had the coldest two weeks in June since 1930's was it?

Is this even news anymore... it's like we are all sitting around waiting for ice cubes to melt. When there is a substantial change or a revolutionary comprehensive study to report then okay, but we are hearing the same thing we’ve heard for years, viewing the same footage of melting ice, and still watching the mercury drop in our thermometers…
There are definitely better thing I can think of doing then re-visiting old news stories over and over and over again.

sounds like it is about keeping the beach clean to me... and some quirky stories that will make a little fun of extreme enviromentalists.

Tonight, CHEK is exploring if Vancouver Island can sustain its population should the tankers full of Mexican avacados hit an ice-berg (because the earth isn't warming, its cooling because of Chem Trails according to PSR).

So, does this mean Global Television has bought the Al Gore "Lie", hook line/lie and sinker?

There's obviously a Global agenda, meaning more like a "New World Order" instruction pamplet handed out to Global management across the land. Have you thought about the select and  'elite' media who now control and dictate this Global Warming agenda to masses of their TV viewers, listeners and readers of CanWest newspapers.
I noticed  Global had a nice little "tributorial" about the David Suzuki foundation on tonight's Global News.

I'd like to know how BC Global ND Ian Haysom accepts this type of directive from the Top?

Not by Fire!,
but by Ice...

If Global is so concerned about being green why don't they stop showing infomercials in the middle of the night and shut down the transmitter to conserve energy.

The environment is the new black...and it makes me sick.

Now, every douchebag with a volvo is better than me? Just because they recycle? That's BS.

And why everytime it's gonna rain...it's now a RISK of rain? It's a RISK of frost?...personally...the fear campaign is SO 2007...like the environment.

Anyone who is surprised that Global might possibly be providing an unbalanced opinion about something would do well to learn about CanWest's editorial policies with regards to subjects like Israel and the Liberal Party...

But this doesn't sound like one of those times.  I agree with Flamethrower...these sound like stories about sustainability, waste reduction, recycling...all sensible, non-agenda pushing ideas.  Besides, the environment is a hot topic these days, regardless of your opinion about the issues.  Global is just playing to their audience and following a topical idea...you know, the same things we all do (or at least should be doing) when we're on the air.

When I'm on the air, I don't mislead my audience by telling them that the earth is "heating up" or "overly polluted" and that it's THEIR fault. How the heck is that playing to the audience?

Where does it say that in the press release?  You're twisting the words to suit your own ideology.  The most biased thing about this press release is the headline you've attached to it on this message board.

Think about it. Every Global affiliate is going to be carrying stories that talk about the environment on Friday...ALL DAY LONG. The underlying message is of course going to be Global Warming and how us.. the human race is killing the planet. The only biased thing about this is the way Global is going to present the information and the hidden message being Global Warming.

I haven't seen one news report about the other view point, the view point being Global Warming is not man made. Let alone if Global warming is man made (Which I believe it is not) what is the average joe going to do?  hes not going to change the planet by turning off his lights or using those new incandescent light bulbs (which have Mercury in them). It's the corporations that generate the biggest amounts of pollution. If Global Warming was such a risk, why doesn't the government go after the big corporations that pollute way more then your average joe even 10 million average joe's combined, I've read. Instead they tax common folk. They say the human race is killing the planet, next they will say they need to kill us in millions to save the planet. I've already seen reporters saying 'it's ok to kill yourself, you will help save earth". Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping the environment, but as newsbeat said the hidden message is Global Warming.

this is the ONLY post on this thread that makes sense.

It dosn't matter that every Global station across the country is doing stories on the environment on Friday.. we only watch our local one.  If a story about cleaning up a beach is so horrifing to you then your life really sucks and I feel sorry for you.

there is so much more going on in this world to get upset about.  As Toad said... Global has far crazier shit going on then a day devoted to sorting your recycling.

And Global Warming or not... $1.50 a litre for gas is REAL... walk down to your gas station and LOOK at the price. so conserving gas and moving to hydrogen or the bus or Volvo (if you MPG is good) or bike is good.

what I'D like to see is the Global Morning News team riding their bikes in from the 'burbs to said beaches as part of "Global Goes Green" week.  THAT would make it worthwhile viewing...

I recall one of those Global Insight pieces awhile back where they interviewed some hack from Europe who was here to extoll the virtues of commuter cycling and how everyone back in the Old Country does it.  NOWHERE in this story did ANYONE touch on the fact that our cities are not DESIGNED for commuter cycling.  Most Euro cities are a network of self-contained centres where people live AND work.  Our city engineers sorta missed the mark there...

Methinks they outta do a standup piece with Madryga on all this global "cooling" on the Wet Coast....

You know... I wish we could ride our bikes to work that day - actually I have debated rollerblading or riding my bike to work everyday....but doing that at 3am in the morning would be a little scary...if only there was daylight at that time!

Good idea though...

If I remember correctly .. one of the young lasses who is part of Global's morning crew in Calgary .. rides
her bike to work on a daily basis .. even when the winter winds start blowing in August.   I do not know where she lives in the Stampede city .. or how far away from the TV station that is .. and it was, I believe, more for her health's sake than anything else .. but it proves that it can be done ......

What a marketing spin with some sublimitals -  "GLOBAL Warming", "GLOBAL Economy", "GLOBAL Hysteria", "GLOBAL Television".

The Earth is actually cooling and man has nothing to do about it.  Like regional seasons, the EARTH as a whole, goes through natural seasons (Ice age, slow thaw, warms up, gets colder, ice age....) at the whim of the Sun's "spots", and the diminishing fluctuations in our magnetosphere that periodically undergoes a complete polarity flip.  The weakening of the field allows more solar particles, and various ultra-violet and microwaves in.  Man just dumps garbage and fouls his nest - he can't control world climate.

Master .. sounds a little bit like what happens on a LOCAL front at my home.   If I tend to dump garbage and foul my nest and then forget to clean it up .. there is an icy glare from the better half .. along with
the cold shoulder treatment .. and things only warm up and slightly thaw when my paw digs into the 'job jar' on projects to be completed here .. as well as cleaning up the mess I originally made.

It's actually Angela Kokott, the station's morning show anchor, that bikes to work every day - even when it's -30 outside. Global Calgary is in the NE side of the city close to downtown, so she can't be too far away.

Which helps us to appreciate that even though Calgary is much colder than the wet coast .. it is possible to ride one's bike at most times in this city without fears as expressed by CRS earlier.   Sometimes it is nicer to have the wet stuff rather than the white stuff .. especially when it comes to shovelling the stuff .. but there are benefits such as riding one's two-wheeler without fears of "working all day with that mud stripe up your rear"... Now, if we could only get the westerly winds to slow down a bit; -- just be a gentle breeze....

If you can ride your bike to work everyday, good on ya!  My point is our streets aren't designed for cycling.  Even if your city has put in bike lanes adjacent to the road...you're still mixed in with all that traffic.  love breathing in exhaust when i'm huffing away...

CRS .. you do have a point there ....
It does not matter where one is in terms of congested traffic .. and that includes Calgary at the forefront .. there is going be a lot of foreign matter waiting to be inhaled by the unsuspecting biker ....
.. and development in these sprawling urban centres never did include the possibility of having pathways dedicated to the biker.   In fact, Calgary's finest are doing speed patrols and ticketing those pedallers who are biking faster than a posted speed limit .. to ensure that pedestrians or skaters or other users are not put in any danger while doing their thing on the same pathway.   That's taking a lot of incentive away in cities such as this one .. from using one bike regardless of the reason.

ticketing speeding "cyclists"...that is so WRONG.  Are Calgary's finest that desperate to reach their ticket quota??

How about everyone's thoughts about this morning's Global show?  Interesting to note on City-TV Simi and Dave are down at Lonsdale Quay.  Wonder if this was in response to Global going to the beach or if they were planning to do this all along.  It's refreshing...almost Today Show like...for both shows to get out of the studio.  Let's see more of this...

Here are examples of two people whose understanding of global climate change is so limited, they end up arguing for the "green side". The earth's climate is not as simple as the climate in your house where you turn the temperature up and it gets warmer in the whole house. When the earth's temperature rises in one area, it can and does cause others to be wetter, windier, colder, hotter, drier etc. So "watching the mercury drop" and seeing record cold and rain is something you should get used to as a part of global climate change.

You do know the planet and the solar system goes through hot and cold periods? and other planets have been warming up as well, so I guess those aliens better stop flying their space crafts. I also guessthe thousands of scientists and meteorologist that refute Al Gore and companies views and "facts"  on global warming or global climate also have limited understanding. I also find it funny how when its hot out its global warming, then when its snowing, wet, winding, below average temperature its global climate change or you hear nothing about it.
