Vic's kid, not Elmer's.

Personally, my kids will stand on their own two feet on their own merits.  There's enough punks with a sense of entitlement out there these days, why add another one?

And Saskatoon is getting more expensive to live in, yes, but it's still a gorgeous city that for its size does quite well for itself re: entertainment and things to "do".

Feel free to give me crap, but i just heard about this website tonight after going out with some co-workers.  It's obvious I am far out of the loop, was this a website you are directed to when graduating from **BC?  Just curious.

Seriously though.  I was very entertained as I was reading this thread.  I just MAY be that guy who got the drive gig, my last name MAY start with a D and end with an UBOIS...who knows.  Anyways, in answer to some questions.   Don't live at home, and haven't gotten an allowence increase in almost 6 years...damn...good call on that, I could be getting 29 dollars a week, as opposed to the 20 I was getting back when I was 16.  So much for being pro-active.  I guess once you start getting paychecks twice a month (for doing good work) you forget about asking Daddy for your allowence.  I will check on that though, perhaps if he has had enough beer the night I ask, I may get some back-pay, inflation is a bitch, and 20 just won't cut it anymore.

Besides that (as I believe the housing situation was and still is, the most important topic of this post...screw radio!!  lets make sure we know the exact living situation of Mr. Dubois...and i mean the younger, better looking one...not "that" Mr. Dubois) people can give me shit if they feel like it, it's part of the job.  Hell, had you told me a year ago that I would one day be more then a producer, I would have laughed at you.  My PD happened to see something in me, it's sure not my fault.  If I suck, hell, let me know...pat@929thebullrocks.com   let me know whether I suck as a DJ, or an MD...I really don't have a preference.  Seriously, e-mail me right now.  I have turned off the spam filter, so we should be golden.

Ironically I still remember being told the convo that happened between "daddy" and my PD.

Hurk:  I really want to make Pat the MD, I think he has it.
Vic: Are you sure??  He's really new, I don't know....
Hurk: Trust me, I can sense it
Vic: Well...I will leave it up to you then, I hope you're right!

Later on that night when I spoke to Vic on the phone:

Me:  Dude...i'm nervous!
Vic: Your boss has faith in you..don't screw it up!1
Me: But still....it's almost too much
Vic:  Suck it up!!!   Have some faith in yourself, Hurk knows his shit!

Yeah apparently...that remains to be seen.  I am appalled at Vic however...forcing the PD's hand like that??  Horrifying.

Chickofradio (also known as **Y*TA *) I look forward to working with you.  If what these guys are saying is any indication...you most certainly have your work cut out for you as I know nothing and will probably be the death of radio in this city.

Look on the bright side at least, The Bull doesn't have Coffeetalk    *cough*

Good on you for chiming in!! There are obviously some jealous & bitter wannabe broadcasters on this board who don't get it. It's absurd to think that some people would discriminate against potentially great employees because of their last name. I've been in the market for almost a year now and you're doing a great job under Hurk's direction.

On another note, it is sad that Saskatoon's COL isn't much different than Edmonton nowadays. That being said, in Vancouver I had a 75 minute commute (and that included driving in the HOV lane) and a small but decent townhouse. In Saskatoon, I live in a 4 level split about 10 minutes from work (depending on traffic on the "Spadina Freeway"). Sure... there's no ocean, no mountains and we have harsh winters, but if you're from here... you get it. While I do I really miss the coast & everyone at The Beat, I'm happier than I've ever been living and working here. Some people actually get that.

I personally am not a fan of people that get into the business because they are hired by a family so this thread I found interesting. I was in Saskatoon the other day for the Mike Weir charity event and actually tuned into the Bull to hear this guy that "doesn't deserve to be in radio". As much as I hate to say it, I thought he was pretty good. One of the breaks was hard to hear him over his music he had playing but other than that... not bad. Hopefully he sticks with it. He has talent and a huge upside.

For god's sake! I had a bunch of really clever and hard hitting stuff to say here, mainly addressing some of the other points people made about me, professionally or personally.  However, It appears I have forgotten.  My bad.  The other reason I came back was to publically apoligize for the "Coffeetalk" jab at the end of my last post.  Not that anyone made me, I just feel it was counter-productive if I want any chance of getting an allowance again.

Oh, to the thread starter, MATT MAYS?!  That's prairie boy, country rock at its finest!  Great stuff, and our listeners love it.  S'all good though, the Bull tries new things.  When we need some crossover stuff to freshen up the CC, we choose Matt Mays.  The new country station in "The City That Rhymes With Fun" chooses Michael Buble instead, and that doesn't make one of us right or wrong, just different stations with different ideas.  Who the hell knows though, we play Snoop Dogg as well, who knew that would catch on and be recieved well by the listeners?

Diverse group here though.  Lots of different viewpoints in this topic.
-you got the bitter, old radio jocks who have overinflated egos, a misguided sense of entitlement, and who somehow feel they are gods gift to radio...with nothing to back it up.
-people who seem to hate Saskatchewan, it's probably a football thing, I get it.  Really though, it's like some of you go from stating facts about the province, to just straight bashing it to hell for no reason.  Did our humble province call your moms fat or something?
-and finally...cool, down to earth people who have their heads on straight.  Like my future co-worker, C**is M**rs, and that guy above me ^^.  Cheers!

Gotta go!  Mom and Dad are going out and the babysitter is here!  We get to make cookies tonight!   And if i'm reaaaaaaaaly good, i get to stay up late and watch Dora!  Yay!

Well said Pat.  You got the gig because you have a great natural sound and your last name has a wealth of heritage in this market.  It's a talent based industry and the one who shines brighter than the rest will get the gig and money.  I also made you my MD for the same reason I made Trapper my MD in Regina.  You are a perfectionist and will stay until the job is done right.  I think with Krysta's experience you two will do just fine

Hey ChrisM do you have a Drive Team on Wired 96.3?

Well stated .... for all of the verbal jabs directed at you .. it was good to see you not punch back .. and to be humble enough to apologize for a statement which was maybe unwarranted.   It is nice as well to see your recognition of differing opinions in this thread .. and concluding your comments by looking forward to working hard for the benefit of your co-workers .. rather than the heritage that you seem to have in this industry.   I say "seem to" since I really don't know who you are .. but your hard work has brought commendation from Hurricane .. and others .. and that's good.  Keep pluggin' away .. and your work will douse the flames of criticism from any who dare to do so.

My Turn

I recently moved to Saskatoon from a much larger city and I really like it here!  I can drive to work in rush hour under 15 minutes.   You can walk downtown at 10PM without the fear of being mugged by cracked crazed lunatic.  All the major concerts and entertainment have or are coming here.   Yes housing is a way more expensive than I would have expected for a smaller city of 200 thousand, but everything else is the same or better... If you live in Alberta or BC, have you renewed you car insurance yet... good luck.  As for the weather, yes its cold here in the winter, but get a grip, we live in Canada and no matter where I have lived people still complain about how cold or wet it is, so no big deal....

As for the kid doing drive on the bull, I have listened to him the past week, because I was wondering what all the BULL was about, and you know what he will do just fine.  He has a lot of raw talent and with the direction of a good PD he will excel, a year or two from now they will have a hard time keeping him in Saskatoon so all you educated college and WABC type (give me 5K and I will make you a radio star) radio grads had better watch out, he might start believing your BULL and come and take your job!!

Last time I check the population of a city does not dictate the cost of a home, the market dictates it.  It's called supply and demand and it's a basic rule of a free market society

No, all you have to worry about is the West Side Gangs sticking you in the ribs with a blade. I wouldn't walk downtown Saskatoon by myself.

I agree with smashup55. Last time I walked down spadina, i almost got hit by some hillbilly in a straw hat driving a tractor (seriously)...I hear those organized gangs you speak of are quite protective of their farming turf.

When I worked in Winnipeg, I walked downtown at night all the time. But I wasn't stupid enough to walk in the north end. That's just asking for it.

Each city has its bad parts. Maybe you live on the east side. In that case, why not take a stroll the length of 20th Street in Saskatoon and see how far you make it before you call a cab to get the hell out of there?

Living in Vancouver, I can walk downtown at any hour and feel safe. Saskatoon DOES have gangs. I know a woman whose son was killed by one.

No, not as safe as everyone thinks. They are trying to rejuvenate the 'West side', but it's a slow process..you can push out the 'scum'...but where do you push them to?

You're absolutely right Smash. There are NO gangs in Vancouver and nobody EVER gets killed downtown.

No, the gangs are in Surrey..and downtown is safe...except Hastings...and I even walked the street there a few times after the bar.

I've never once ran into ANY problems living downtown and walking by myself, at all hours of the night...and my friends from Saskatoon that come and visit me, have told me that they've never felt as safe in Saskatoon..

But, that's just this 5'3", 120lb girls opinion.

But, what do I know? Anyway..wasn't this thread about handing positions of power to those who 'don't deserve it'?
