It seems that Canada AM is returning back to it's old format sometime soon and that the western edtiion will probably cease to exist. Mi-Jung's & Reena's Bios have been removed from Canada' AM's Site.
LOCAL CANADA AM CANCELLED 1230PM/KARIM/CKNW JUN062008
CTV HAS CANCELLED THE VANCOUVER EDITION OF CANADA A-M. THE LOCAL PORTION OF THE NATIONAL BREAKFAST BROADCAST HAD ONLY BEEN RUNNING SINCE THE END OF JANUARY. THE NETWORK HAS CONFIRMED THE CANCELLATION, AND SAYS THE IT ONLY AFFECTS LOCAL ASPECTS OF THE SHOW AND NOT THE ENTIRE CANADA A-M BROADCAST.
Thank God for that cancellation. The entire west coast segment has been abysmally dull and boring from it's outset...strictly amatuer hour...and IMHO,Mi Jung Lee has never been more than a middling talent at anytime in her career..from BCTV onward. OK..time to fire up the flames from her fanclub...hit me with your best shot Mi-Jungsters. I stand by my opinion.
Problem I had was the show was like a clip show from what happened earlier. They could not have any segments in the vancouver studio, they were people who talked to the Toronto Anchors earlier
It happens all the time - the "Eastern-based" corp gives the West a little airtime to cut into "Eastern-based-what's-happening-in-Toronto" morning show as an almost self-propagating failure, instead of a separate "Western-based" Canada Am to play only for the Western time zones. Why not have a show out of Vancouver - "Western Canada Am", air international snips from the 2-3 hr "hense" show in the East, but gear the morning show for, say Sask, Alberta, & B.C. - run either out of Calgary or Vancouver.
With all the decisions being made out of Toronto, I just don't see that happening.
Neither do I - UNLESS a westerner with deep pockets like a Jimmy Pattison decides to open a moderate sized western network - hey with radio & TV! I'd sign on! Let's put it in Nanaimo!
Canada AM breakfast show cancelled in Vancouver after failing to attract viewer support by Jeff Lee Vancouver Sun Published: Saturday, June 07, 2008
CTV is cancelling the Vancouver-based western version of its popular Canada AM breakfast television show.
Saying the five-month-old experiment hadn't generated the support among viewers that it had expected, the broadcaster said it will revert to delivering the national Canada AM show in British Columbia as of Monday.
"It was an experiment, and we hoped to keep a western version," said Tom Haberstroh, vice-president and general manager of CTV BC. "Viewers told us they wanted the national version back."
The western version was anchored in Vancouver by veteran journalist Mi-Jung Lee. Haberstroh said Lee and all full-time staff and talent will continue to have jobs at CTV.
The national version is anchored by Beverly Thomson and Seamus O'Regan.
Haberstroh said the changes also affect Alberta, which received an hour of the western production.

Much like WIC used to be before Corus and Canwest carved it up and took what they wanted of it.
Maybe CTV should do what BCTV/CHEK did in their final years as CTV affiliates...
Have the Vancouver station do a local newscast in the morning in lieu of AM... those in the lower mainland who really need their Bev & Seamus fix can go watch it on the Victoria station in its entirety on its normal timeslot.
That or do what the US stations do - 5-7 local and 7-9 national...
Going local in some form is the only way CTV can even start to compete with Global in the mornings (in the West, anyway).
I'm not sure that CTV could Use 'A ' in the same way that Chek was used because I think the CRTC may be being a bit stricter with it's regulation of 1 channel / market and I suspect that the network probably requires It's regional affiliates to show Canada Am
If they go back to the 6:30 AM start with the re-run of the previous night's 11:30 newscast they could slot a 1/2 hour morning newscast in that time slot.
It looks like Reena will still be with CTV her Bio has been updated to show the change as far as the cancellation of Canada Am Vancouver.
Canada AM gets destroyed by local Global morning shows in Vancouver, Edmonton (10 times the viewership) and Calgary. If CTV stations in major markets outside of Toronto had their druthers they woud dump Canada AM in lieu of a local show in a minute. Only then would they be able to compete.
