Not unlike buying the rights to the Seinfeld theme and playing it on the Rosanne show, just doesn't work IMO. I think CTV (TSN,RDS) have done more harm to their brand by this than good, especially with all their self serving back patting, it was getting embarrassing yesterday morning on the Canada AM show....kind of like putting Brad Pitts shirt on Dave Pratt, a man wearing the same shirt, but he sure ain't sleeping with Ms Jolie.
I'm sorry, but I don't associate the song with the CBC. To me it's purely a hockey anthem, and I'm happy that it's still going to continue to be on a Canadian hockey program.
But the rights wouldn't have been that much had it not been for the longevity of the song on the CBC and the program HNIC. I'm sorry but it's a brand and unless TSN/CTV has the entire package the song won't fit. It's a novelty and publicity for them and that's it. If they really want to shake things up, they should offer to sell it back to the CBC and they'll come out like heroes. Watch for it.

Now THAT is about the most brilliant thing I've heard yet!! EVERYBODY WINS!!
I'll own up to copy/pasting this from another website, but I think the idea is brilliant!
"I HAVE AN IDEA! At most hockey games, fans have different chants and songs. If the CBC is so brain-dead as to let the theme song go, we should all go to the games and--instead of chanting the "old stuff"--what would happen if 20,000 or so people started singing the HNIC theme song from the stands."
The headline of this forum makes me laugh. "CTV/TSN Steals Hockey night in Canada theme." Why is CTV made to look like the bad guy (steals.) They paid hefty for the theme. It was CBC that was asleep at the wheel.
Apparently Tom's son, who manages him, said that they were going to work with the CBC to do just that. Something tells me they'll be much better off trying to come up with something new...
That song belongs to hockey - and CTV is taking over hockey - so I'm glad they're getting the song. It will be GREAT hearing it as Team Canada goes for gold in the Olympics!
The cynical part of me says CBC was playing us the way they did a few years ago with the Ron McLean contract. Only this time, it blew up in their taxpayer financed faces.
I wonder if CTV has the bucks to steal Cherry and McLean, too.
