ABC's Nightline Closes Gap with Letterman
courtesy TV Newser @ MediaBistro.com

Poised to celebrate its 30th anniversary next year, ABC's Nightline continues to draw viewers with its two-year-old, three-anchor format.

Last week, Nightline beat CBS's The Late Show with David Letterman in Total Viewers (3.62M v. 3.43M) and in the A25-54 demo (1.76M v. 1.60M). The Tonight Show with Jay Leno continues to be the #1 late night show.

This is Nightline's tenth victory over Letterman in the A25-54 demo this season and the eighth victory in Total Viewers.

For the May sweep, Nightline closed the Total Viewer and A25-54 gaps with Letterman to its smallest in five years, since May 2003, during the early days of the Iraq war.

Letterman needs to get back to more of his on location skits, like he used to do 10 years ago.

Maybe they can revive Larry Bud Melman's corpse for a few extra viewers.

Didn't Letterman have to give up a bunch of his stuff because NBC claimed it was theirs?  Like the small town news thing...wasn't that Letterman's thing?  So really...one of the reasons Leno is so strong is because some of Letterman's best stuff is locked up with NBC.  That, plus one does get the sense that Letterman really isn't trying that hard anymore.  His early days of dropping things off the roof, stupid pet tricks, monkey cams, etc were amazing.

I agree. He isn't trying anymore, but I don't blame him. He is just having fun til' he calls it quits. I would still prefer him over Leno any night.
