It's called and It's a Family Affair of 2nd and 3rd Generation of Broadcasters
The New 107 FM as a Western based radio station in Alberta will be targeting teens and under 30's. John Yerxa, (son of the late Hal Yerxa, founder of Alberta's Super 'Giant' AM Country Radio Station CFCW) and his sons Zachary, Hunter and Barron will appear before the CRTC with their presentation for the New 107 FM in Edmonton.
John Yerxa, Barron, Hunter and Zachary
John tells us son Zachary is the architect of the new format he calls "Younger Variety" It places a large emphasis on new and emerging artists, and plays alternative Pop, Rock, Dance and Hip Hop. The Yerxa's will be making their presention at the CRTC hearings which start tomorrow at the Matrix Hotel in Edmonton.
Being an older male, at 57, I'd probably not listen to NEW FM a lot, if it's approved, of course. But give them credit for establishing an excellent website before going before the CRTC this week -- it shows a level of commitment most of the other applicants haven't put forth. Edmonton's FM band is skewed to older music, older listeners, so NEW FM could strike a chord with the CRTC commissioners.

From what I understand, this is where brothers Barron and Hunter excel! Obviously with of a view of understanding the need, purpose and value of the Networking features of the Internet for today's Broadcasting!
the station would be closer to Bounce perhaps... but very different from Sonic or Bear.
a more adventurous set list than your typical top 40, but still basically a pop station. Alternative pop? Sounds like my DJ set when I play at a club. Cut Copy, MGMT, M83? well done New 107. I'd jam this station tomorrow if it were on the radio in BC.
website is slick, if they don't get the license, someone needs ot hire these cats.
UI like that you can scroll down their playlist and listen to any cut and it streams right there for you.
Good job on the website. Nice to see something to keep the boys busy but is there a big enough market in Edmonton for a station like this, can they make money?
Because, as I've said numerous times, the frequencies that they may pick (107.1/107.3) are currently in use by me, and if they continue on and start testing, well, I'll have to switch my stuff off that frequency or else a certain government organization (as well as various listeners) are going to attack me.
Worst of all, people who usually do not talk about radio in daily conversation, are, so that means their marketing is working. (I blame Hunter and Facebook.)
Wouldn't it be a risk to cater to young people... I mean after all we hardly turn out to vote for government leaders can we be relied upon to fill out ratings diaries??
Looks like the "Youth Contemporary" format that Harvard launched in Saskatoon a few months back. I also think it looks a lot like their last application in Edmonton a few years back. At the time they proposed a format that would combine Urban, Alt, Pop Rock, and Dance. The commission decided to go with and Urban (Bounce) and Modern Rocker (Sonic) because Harvard did a terrible job at explaining what the format would sound like and they didn't have a name for it at the time. This might be the winning station this go around in Edmonton, Youth Based, Independent company and built on "New and Emerging Artists." I think they should now offer to play 50% CanCon
Love to see a local guy doing well and taking his shot - but with Bounce, Sonic and the Bear, does Edmonton really need another youth based station?
In my mind yes! The Bounce has no compitition in the market since the demise of 96x. Sonic & The Bear are way different. From what I gather, New107 will have the same feel as the Bounce but will have a very broad playlist and as a 25 year old that's exactly what I'm looking for. Right now the Bear is most appealing to me (music mix is top notch and they have great jocks). The Bounce is my 2nd choice when I'm in Edmonton followed by Sonic. The problem with the Bounce, the rotations are way to quick (like with all station with that format) and alot of jock talk is about entertainment crap .
If I feel like a pop station, I have no other choice. Some rock, with some pop plus some unheard of emerging talent is exactly what I'm looking for. I've talked with people my age and younger, gave them the website and they are all excited about it. These guys are local, understand the market and if the music is scheduled right I think they will have a winner on there hands. Times have changed and I think what they are proposing will appeal to youth... for those kids who actually know what a radio is...
