Just thought everyone would like to know, Newcap bought the CFXL call letters from The Eagle in High River / Okotoks.
The Eagle is no longer to be referred to as CFXL.
The Eagle 100.9's new call letters are CKUV.

All depends on how needy Newcap was.  By having 'CF'XL, they're double-backing their ratings opportunity.  Less chance for listeners tripping up stations cuz of the call letters.  It's all do-or-die for XL now.

One woud have to assume it was a healthy sum. Not often do  you SEE this strategic measure.

CIQX-FM officially began broadcasting on August 30th, 2001, at 1:03 PM, formerly known as "The Breeze", however, the station was rebranded on December 26th, 2005 as "California 103", a Soft adult contemporary/jazz format.

On March 3, 2008, at 3:00 PM local time, the station switched to the current classic hits/oldies format branded as "XL 103". The last song played on "California 103" was "Like a Lover" by Emelie-Claire Barlow and the first song played by "XL 103 FM" was "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John according to Nielsen BDS.

The station is owned by Newcap Broadcasting. The station's license was originally awarded to Telemedia, but that company was acquired by Standard Broadcasting before CIQX launched. Standard retained a minority interest in the station until 2007, when it was fully acquired by Newcap.

And then there's the significant history of the XL-brand in Calgary - immediately recalled by the target demographic.
