Here's the scoop on GM Greg Douglas, VancouverSun.com Saturday, April 26, 2008 SCENE & HEARD: This was real-life television in the Global TV newsroom late last Tuesday afternoon. Sports director Squire Barnes and reporter Brian Coxford spilled out the information they'd gathered about who they were being told the new Canucks GM was going to be while veteran news director Ian Haysom listened, took a few notes, listened some more and finally said: "Go with it!" Barnes announced on Global's 5 o'clock Early News that Mike Gillis was the man the Canucks had hired and the media jungle drums began beating from coast to coast. "It wasn't just me," Barnes says. "Our news guys were on it, too. We had two independent sources like you're supposed to have, not that we didn't trust source number one. Jay Janower and Trevor Henderson chased down some player sources they've built up over the years. I phoned the Canucks after we went to air with the story and they wouldn't confirm it. By that time, TSN and Sportsnet were all over it. These things are nice when you're right." Gillis was front and centre at the next morning's press conference. http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/sports/story.html?id=efd4d05e-a340-4b01-a766-eced20186bef. |
