Medicine Hat's Arthur Kent sues over 'Charlie Wilson's War' footage
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Canadian reporter known as the “Scud Stud” during the 1991 Gulf War has sued the makers of “Charlie Wilson’s War” over footage used in the Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts movie.
Arthur Kent, whose live NBC reports on Iraq’s Scud missile attacks on Saudia Arabia made him a celebrity, claims in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday that filmmakers violated his intellectual property rights.
The lawsuit claims Universal Studios and other companies used segments of a 1986 news program Kent made about the Soviet Union’s war in Afghanistan without his consent.
It seeks an injunction against distributing the movie, among other provisions, in addition to unspecified damages.
Universal spokesman Michael Moses didn’t immediately return a phone call early Friday seeking comment.
The 2007 film, directed by Mike Nichols, also starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams.
The takeout window? Obviously none of you are up to date on Arthur Kent and/or Afghanistan. Arthur Kent has a website, a documentary film company (films which have won awards) and ran for public office. His website covers the people, the heroin trade, how the airport in Kabul is being used to run the heroin trade, how the Taliban is being funded by the heroin trade, and the West's involvement in Afghani politics and the implications of the Karzai government. Check it out: skyreporter.com...you might learn something.
He deserves compensation and/or credit for the footage and his voice being used in Charlie Wilson's War. He was there from the beginning of the Communist occupation of Afghanistan and the inception of the Taliban as a US funded fighting force. Gee, if I risked my life to cover a story and years later they used my film reports without my permission, I'd sue as well. I don't think I could do what Arthur Kent does, with as much integrity and passion as he has.
If you think he shouldn't sue that is fine, but one shouldn't make judgements without knowing the whole story. Hey, maybe that is why Arthur Kent is an award winning journalist and your aren't; he checked his facts before shooting off his mouth.

Well, PaddyBoy - I don't think Mr. Kent even knows about this thread or cares. I'm sure he's more concerned with the recent attempt on President Karzai's life and the recent activity in Southern Afghanistan.
I will say that I met Arthur Kent decades ago when he was editing footage he shot while the Soviets were occupying Afghanistan. He certainly was kind enough to enlighten a then ditzy blonde (me) as to world events. I appreciated his input and the time and patience he gave to me. I just worked for a production company where he using our edit bays.
Gee, what do you have against this guy? Did he do something in Canada that Americans never heard about?
I think you can email Arthur directly through that website and I'm sure he'll answer.
