KGMI lets go Debbie Chavez ` by SAM TAYLOR THE BELLINGHAM HERALD Feb. 21 BELLINGHAM — Longtime KGMI 790AM radio show host Debbie Chavez has been let go from the station, she said Wednesday.
Chavez, who worked at KGMI for 27 years, said she didn’t want to discuss why she was let go Tuesday. But she said she loved hosting The Debbie Chavez Show and is searching for another place to do something similar.
Initially asked why she was let go, she said: “That’s the $24,000 question,” but said she didn’t think it was appropriate to go into detail in public.
Chavez did not spend her last day on the air. By Wednesday her biographical page on KGMI’s Web site was still up but contained no information.
KGMI General Manager Rick Staeb said he could not comment because the issue was a “personnel matter.” Staeb said that the issue was not due to budget cuts.
Chavez had worn many hats at the station. She worked as operations and program director, as a morning show anchor with host Brett Bonner and finally focused on the afternoon program, which was billed as examining “life issues from a spiritual perspective.”
