Not really. Shaw/Corus sold their stations, saying they don't want RD's market size. Newcap couldn't apply. Rogers knows it got lucky getting Medicine Hat. Canwest isn't in radio much anymore. Astral is too busy.

Never heard of CHIP Media, must be a local application. Clear Sky is in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat so Red Deer is obvious for them to take a shot at. Golden West, Harvard, CJVR, Touch and Vista have applied in all the recent calls. LA Radio is just up the road in Lacombe. So no surprises really. Thought Rogers and CHUM/CTV would go for Red Deer as they have stations in Calgary and Edmonton, but with the call for Edmonton at the same time, maybe wisely focussing all their attention on that bigger market. Was surpised Vista didn't go for Edmonton. They applied in Vancouver, so not scared of the bigger markets and with their station in Grande Prairie, Edmonton would be a no brainer don't you think?
after the kelowna decisions came down I'm gonna say Vista gets this one...
Are you being ironical?
Vista is a small to mid range company that just received approval for another licence. I doubt that the CRTC will grant them more than 1 licence in 2008.
My money is on CJVR, 9 applications, Zero new licences so far, they're due....
freq, I wasnt trying to be anything. Just speculating... seems the crtc hands out licences in trends.. 04/05 evanovs got some licences 06/07 harvard got some.. just -speculating- the comissions new flavor of the week is vista..? (and stiring the pot)
I seriously hope, however, whoever has the best application(s) gets the new station(s) in red deer and edmonton ...and vancouver and ontario for that matter.

Kelowna Radio: “A wild west town without a sheriff.”
That’s what Commissioner Michel Morin said after the Kelowna CRTC hearing last October. Today’s CRTC decision grants FM stations to Walter Gray (Sun Country Cable) & Vista Radio of Calgary, with Morin dissenting from the other two Commissioners.
In the decision, Morin criticizes existing Kelowna broadcasters, the process, and his fellow Commissioners, saying, "The dominant players in the Kelowna market appropriated the new players’ formats even before the hearings were held, thereby short-circuiting the call for applications issued in response to Vista Radio’s 2006 application."
"Were some factors more important than others? The [CRTC] public notice did not say. Even today, no one - including industry - knows which factors were the most influential in determining the CRTC’s selections. In short, the CRTC must be more transparent to undertakings that are making investments and taking risks."
Dissenting opinions are relatively uncommon in CRTC decisions and Morin's tone and length is equally rare.
Morin finishes, "I believe that the proposals submitted by Corus Radio, Deep Waters Media and CTV were superior to those submitted by Sun Country and Vista Radio. Even more important, they were fundamentally different. Clearly, both of the Commission’s choices favour male listeners! Some diversity!" he adds.
Just for kicks I did some reading on these - I highly recommend if you have a bit of time to kill some day to do the same - to me it's a great example of where the future of small market radio is headed.
Harvard appeared to put NO effort into their application, I couldn't figure out what Golden West was doing (seriously, look through it and explain it to me) and Vista said at the end of theirs that although they were applying as a classic hits they may do soft rock if it turns out to be a better fit!!!!
The little companies like LA, Clear Sky and CJVR easily put the most polished proposals together and whoever Chip media is has a bit of game as well.
well i did do some reading (thanks for the suggestion) and i have to say i hope a new hits/chr/top 40/new rock station comes of all this. young people are tuning out and listing to anything but radio in red deer...hope this strikes a note with the crtc. seriously. incidentally, personally, it would be nice to hear something between bounce and vibe on the drive other then the filler of big105
