The Edmonton show was a bit rocky - some timing errors going to and from network, the ticker not appearing consistently ie) it appears right before AND durring commercial breaks or not appearing during the local segments, some graphics errors, and the same stories were played over and over... but it's a nice attempt. However they should give the Edmonton segments a separate news and weather anchor because it looked like she was doing too many things at once.
I think the hair, makeup and clothes..set, lighitng and graphics are wayyy better than global but mijung doesn't seem like a morning person....neither does lynn but at least there are two on global to liven things up. rena's hair and makeup and clothes are better on canada am but everything was repeated over and over again.
Had to watch a bit this morning (snow knocked out my global feed) around 7:20am and their timing was brutal. Omar "demolished" an interview right after they had a minute of dead air before throwing to Vancouver. It went downhill from there.
I don't know, but it just seems a little disjointed for me.
It seems really awkward to watch. The transitions between Mi Jung as local anchor then to national anchor, and the same thing for national weather in to local traffic, just seems bizarre.
If I was Rogers, I'd be using this as an opportunity to re-evaluate BT. Personally, I'd consider taking it and pushing it almost exclusively in to local news wheel - much like the 6a-7a hour on City Toronto, with heavy emphasis on news/weather/traffic.
i watch for a bit...then I gravitate to global again. more local content. It's too disjointed and repetitive and if something big happened I am not sure CTV would be on it right away.
Maybe they'll get into the groove after a while, but right now there is a halting, forced delivery that isn't cutting it. It just doesn't have any flow.
A couple of people on the Edmonton Journal's venting page aren't liking the new format either...
"The new format for Canada AM is disappointing. I don't enjoy the anchors from Vancouver. They have nothing in common with Edmontonians and I can't relate to them."
"CTV has made such a mess of Canada AM, I don't think I'll watch it again."
Finally tuned in this AM, and I have to agree with most of the above comments. While Mi Jung is the consummate professional, she seems unsuited to this gig - waayyy too serious. Rena looks infinitely more professional than she did on global, but the entire show is choppy and lacks personality. I found myself yawning and channel surfing, and for a morning show, that's bad. There was nothing to catch and HOLD my attention, and its so low-key, no energy. I dont see this around for long, unless they make some serious changes. I think Canada AM fans will still tune into what they used to watch. and skip the local show altogether.
The local Global Morning shows in Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary kick Canada AM's butt. I 'm sure if CTV had their druthers, they would launch local morning shows. Canada AM claims to be Canada's #1 morning show but they lose in every market.
What's happening isn't surprising. CTV 9 is getting no ratings with the morning show despite all the publicity. They don't get strong ratings against Global in any of their newscasts. I think Mi Jung is totally ill-suited to be a morning show host. She was good as the late night anchor, but you need someone with a little more jump and thats just not her personality. If they really wanted an ethnic female anchor, why didn't they hire Sophie Lui? Unlike Rena, she is only a fill-in at Global right now, and probably would have taken the job.
It tends to take a while for a show to get a foothold in a market, so it is probably necessary to wait for the next ratings book to come out. Global will probably always be the ratings leader in this market because o the longest time they were the only national network affiliate that had a fully local evening newscast that was well funded.
Does anyone have any fall ratings informaton for the local newscasts?
I have tried to tune in to the "new" Canada AM from the beginning. Something is seriously lacking. Perhpas it is Mi Jung. Don't know if a replacement would work, but Mi Jung needs to be a little more relaxed. Rena's voice seems a little "high pitched" since going over to Channel 9. I like Canada AM with the anchors from Toronto, but eventually I end up with BT. One of the pluses for BT is that the notes at the bottom of the screen are more readable than those on Global. On Global you'll really have to squint to read them in black. Back to BT.
Gordon asked about the next ratings book. All the TV stations are now on daily ratings. For example they can see what the minute-to-minute numbers were on Monday by the time they get into their offices on Tuesday. So every station knows what's happening immediately, unlike radio which does have to wait for the book. So CTV has a good look at its struggles every day. Basically the morning ratings haven't changed since CTV put in its local show. Global always had a big lead on BT, and has the same advantage on CTV.
It won't either Arran or Amy. They have been auditioning people for the last few weeks, I suspect they'll have a new person soon. But I believe they would like a visible minority to take position.
One more thing, in regards to what xaco80 said about ratings. I hear from a reliable source that this week CTV barely rated in the mornings. BT had better numbers than it did, but Global was at least 2 ratings points ahead of both competitors.
