From the Last Link:

Whitey's back

CHED's program director Sid Smyth got his New Year's wish - and on just the second day of 2008.

Not only could he sleep in for the first time in months, he could do so knowing the CHED Morning News program was back in the capable hands of Gord Whitehead.

With little advance fanfare (other than Bryan Hall showing up late for his 5:55 a.m sportscast because he was caught chatting with Whitey), the radio veteran returned to the airwaves and opened his first show in four months nonchalantly with ... what else ... a weather forecast.

<snips>

But the best line of the morning came at 6:25 when it was time for the Sportsdesk with Bryan Hall. Gord introduced the hair that roared with a bemused "Are you still here?"

When it came time to tease listeners of the highlights of the upcoming Dave Rutherford Show, Gord asked fill-in host Rob Breakenridge, "Is (Dave) taking more time off? What's with that guy? That guy takes more time off than anybody I know - except me."

I guess it wasn't that big a surprise to anyone - other than the Last Link folks.   Whoever did mornings would always say they were filling in for Gord.  Then before Christmas I'm now told they started running Seasons Greetings from him, saying that he would be back in the New Year.  And a coworker of mine says on Monday, Syd Smith kept saying Gord would be back today.

The poor unfortunate listeners ask that question regularly.   But it's prefaced with "Why?"

Heard Halsy recently yapping about the great goaltending work of the Oilers' "ma-CHEW bir-ON"

Must be Martin Biron's brother.

Then I heard him doing the banter with Global's Gord Steinke yesterday afternoon about the Daryl Katz proposal to the EIG.  Talk about uncomfortable and awkward.  Steinke did an admirable job manoveuring through Halsy's mindless comments.

Time to retire Bryan.
