If you’re going to be shopping for one of Apple’s portable digital media players this holiday season, you now have several more choices. Today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the wraps off a few new models, including the iPod Touch, which is an 8 millimeter thick device based on the iPhone. It uses the same 3.5 inch touch sensitive display as the phone, and has wireless Internet access and the Safari web browser, but not phone capability. A version with 8GB of storage capacity will sell for $299US and a 16GB version will go for $399; both will go on sale this month. In his usual shy, retiring style, Jobs described the iPod Touch as “one of the seven wonders of the world”. There’s no word yet on which of the existing seven wonders got kicked off the list to make room for this new gadget. Other new versions include an iPod Nano which can play video on its 2.5 inch screen (the current version has a 2 inch screen but doesn’t play video). The video Nano will retail for $149US for the 4GB model and $199 for the 8GB unit. Apple will also be selling iPhone ringtones at 99 cents a pop, plus the original 99 cent cost for the song; users will be able to choose from a 500,000 song catalog beginning next week. Canadian SRPs are $169 for the new 4GB iPod Nano and $329 for the 8GB iPod Touch. Prices for the higher capacity models are not yet available, but here's a guess: $229 and $429 respectively. Read all about 'em at Apple Canada. Update: According to The Globe And Mail, the Canadian SRP for the 16GB iPod Touch is $449. The Apple Canada online store, which was down for updating when the original story was posted, now lists all of the new models. The SRP for an 8GB Nano is $219. |
