People ask me quite often how to go about recording audio from Tah Intarwebs. If you have a soundcard which provides a “What You Hear” option, it’s fairly simple: select that for your input, fire up your recording application, and away you go. If your soundcard doesn’t have that option, though, it can be a lot trickier, or you may be out of luck entirely. Applian Technologies has a little piece of software which makes it a one-click affair no matter what kind of audio system you have. Freecorder installs as a toolbar in Windows XP or Vista. Then, anytime you hear something you want to capture, you just press the Record button, and Freecorder automatically generates an MP3 or WAV file, in your choice of quality. Done. I’m not really a big fan of cluttering up my screen with extra toolbars, but in this case, the simplicity of Freecorder makes up for that – and the price is definitely right. Read a Geek dot com review of Freecorder here. It includes a pointer to the download site, and if you're interested, you might want to grab a copy before the Recording Industry Association Of America finds out about it and starts squawking about it. |
