Move over, milk carton. The latest missing kid finder is: your computer. Specifically, your computer’s screensaver. The National Center For Missing And Exploited Children, which is the organization responsible for the Amber Alert system, has released a downloadable Windows screensaver which uses a distributed network to display constantly updated news about missing or abducted kids, along with their photographs. Every year, more than 800,000 children are reported missing in the United States alone. Unlike the Amber Alert system, which only reports new cases, the screensaver provides updated info on new and older cases, and along with the potentially massive distribution, the photographs are key: the NCMEC says that one in six kids whose photos are released is eventually recovered.
