Just as a volume of water expands to fill the available space, data always seems to expand to fill the available hard drive space, and this is especially true if you do a lot of work with audio and video. You come home from the store wondering how you're ever going to fill up that 500GB monster, and six months later, you're figuring out which stuff to dispose of so that you can make room for some new files. And, with high definition video getting a toehold, the problem is only going to accelerate. Engineers at Toshiba, Seagate and other drive manufacturers are working on new technology which could increase the maximum 180GB per square inch limit of today's hard drive by a factor of ten, and they say that such drives may be available within five years.
