Remember when the monster got into the projection booth at the theater, ate the hapless projectionist, and caused the projector to stop, at which point the bulb in the projector burned through the film and made a big ugly blob on the screen? The monsters will have to come up with something different to scare the movie patrons now.

Digital distribution lets studios securely send pristine quality movies via satellite to all theaters around the world at the same time, relegating those old clunky film canisters to the antique bin.  The studios like the security and ease of distribution, the audiences like the stunning video quality, and the theater owners like just about everything except writing the cheques for the conversion from analog to digital.
