Sure, this has everything to do with music sales on the Internet.
It has nothing to do with the fact that HMV has a big store with fairly low prices a couple blocks away. Or Best Buy. Or Future Shop ... (which is right next door.) Nothing at all.

Probably has more to do with music theft on the internet... I mean music sharing. But yes, a younger demo that doesn't pay for music and an older demo that increasingly steals from the internet coupled with suburban outlets that make the onetime traditional journey downtown unnecessary are more likely the cause.
I didn't realize Sam's was still opened until I looked upon this thread. The local store has been closed too, but it was more of the big box retailers that took out the customers from Sam's. I used to work at Big K Music, and I believe the same thing happened there with the lack of customers. No one dared to come in and check the prices, or stock. Just walked by the store, and would head off to Zellers or Future Shop.
By chance, I happened to sit next to SAM at a Music West event a few years back. he had lots of gold bling. His son Jason had been taking over the business and I remember there was father son tension at one of the panel discussions. SAM was very old school retail and Jason just seemed angry at Dad and out of his league. At least they had that iconic neon sign on Younge street in Toronto. It'll be a shame to see that go. But things change.
