When it comes to Junior Hockey Play by Play , he is no Dan Russell! Good broadcasters , but not good at play by play . As stated in an earlier post, they remind you of that annoying cousin you had when you were a kid ,who would call the play by play of you and your brothers  ColecoTable Hockey game while visiting the family at Christmas. By the start of the 2nd period you wanted to duct tape him to the furnace !

LOL.  Doesn't everyone dream of calling play-by-play when they're spinning those 2-dimensional Coleco players?

You're right.  Loubardias does not always sound like a pro, but you have to give him credit for trying to be unique and exciting.

Reminds me of when Darren Dutcheshyn started out with Global Edmonton and his unique brand of "speaking".  It was refreshing, at the time, to hear something a little different.  But I believe TSN has neutered him of any of that free-spirit announcing.

Lets keep in mind here people that it's a lot harder than it looks (sounds?) to do solid play-by-play and still be unique.

I agree - Loubardias is not nearly at the same level as some of Sportsnet's other hockey play-by-play talent (Jim Hughson or Dean Brown, for instance) but he's still OK. Definitely better than Dan Russell on Shaw.

You have to appreciate his passion and I would say Loubardias definitely does a good job of preparation, too. When he steps up to do the odd Oilers game on Sportsnet West, he does a decent job. (Certainly not any worse than Roger Millions' work on Calgary Flames telecasts...)

But why do I get the impression he sounds like "Billy Crystal doing Sammy Davis Jr?"

I have listened to and/or watched Pete since his days as a play-by-play guy for the Regina Pats and I have never had a problem with him.  So,  after spotting this thread and giving it a read, I was a bit suprised by all the Hate-Pete rhetoric.

None the less, maybe things have changed, so I watched a bit of the Cup action yesterday afternoon.  Now, I only watched a period or so and I did spend some time flipping back and forth with the Ottawa/Buffalo game, but still, I don't see what everyone is complaining about.

I thought he did a fine job and I enjoyed listening to him.

I guess we can chalk this one up to personal taste.

Peter?  Pompous??  You have obviously never met this man.  I worked with him for six years and know he and his wife well.  Peter is one of the kindest most generous broadcasters (and human beings) I have ever had the pleasure to work with.  I am sorry that you do not appreciate his call == that is one thing == but when it comes to this hardworking and dedicated man's work ethic and character he is second to none.

PL was always a good PBB guy imo.  He gives you a good idea of the game, paints a good picture, and whether you like his voice or not, at least he doesn't totally f-up half the game like Bob Cole does for the past decade.

Peter used to come on our sports talk show when he was first doing the call for the Pats.  He was never an arrogant guy to any of us back then, just a guy who liked hockey.  Is he affected on the air?  Sure.  But he's not a train wreck like some of the guys out there doing this job.

The criticism of PL on this message board doesn't surprise me.  Around here there are so many posters who feel the industry didn't recognize their true gift to broadcasting and take out their angst on pretty much anything they can.
