KZOK moves to No. 1 in the winter ratings
By BILL VIRGIN
SEATTLE P-I REPORTER

posted 4.53 pm May 4

Arbitron Inc.'s winter-quarter radio ratings for the Seattle-Tacoma market contained a bit of a surprise in the form of a new top station: classic-rock KZOK-FM (102.5).

While KZOK has long been near the top of the ratings list, with its Bob Rivers morning show and a lineup of market veterans such as Steve Slaton and Gary Crow, in recent quarters the ratings have been topped by country station KMPS-FM (94.1), urban contemporary KUBE-FM (93.3) and, in the fall-quarter book, soft-rock KRWM-FM (106.9), which benefits from its all-Christmas music format in December.

But for winter quarter it was KZOK at the top, up from a tie for eighth in the fall book.

Arbitron's ratings, released Friday, measure listeners 12 and older tuned in from 6 a.m. to midnight Monday through Sunday. They don't include non-commercial stations such as KUOW-FM (94.9) and KEXP-FM (90.3). Arbitron does compile that data and has discussed merging non-commercial stations into its main list, but hasn't done so yet. Recent data indicate that KUOW would be one of the highest-ranked stations in the Seattle-Tacoma market if included.

Station executives and advertisers also say they pay closer attention to data for specific demographic audiences they're trying to reach than the overall ratings and rankings.

The competing news stations KIRO-AM and KOMO-AM placed first and second in the 6-10 a.m. weekday segment, with KZOK-FM coming in third. KRWM-FM was first for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays, while KUBE-FM won 3-7 p.m. and 7 p.m.-midnight. Four stations -- KZOK-FM, KWJZ-FM, KIRO-AM and KMPS-FM -- tied for first for weekend listening.

It would be interesting to see where KUOW-FM and KPLU-FM would fall into the ratings.  Anybody got a guess?

I would think very very high.  Even KPLU's streams are highly rated and ranked.

Arbitron's been having a hard time with online diaries. I believe Seattle is still all paper, but will eventually move to PPM.

If Seattle plays out like other markets were 3rd parties have included NPR in ratings, I think you'd see KUOW in the high 3's 12+ with a smaller but intensely loyal audience. KPLU maybe more likely in the mid 1's.
