It would seem the new hire at Q107 isn't exactly panning out for the brain-trust at Corus. Money well-spent. And how about Jack's continuing decline while Vibe is knocking the doorstep of being number #1. Some interesting things going on in Calgary that's for sure.
Always count on PSR to be a place for mature discussion, right?
But seriously... 97.7 seems to have debuted with the same sized audience that it has taken Fuel how many books (and a format change) to get to....
But the most interesting points in this book for me are:
- CKMX... how much longer before Astral pulls the pin? Someone has to compete with the milquetoast that is CHQR eventually, and there's some audience to gain.
- Country 105 is down 15,000 listeners year-over-year
- Vibe is a solid #2. Wonder how they'll handle being the new Power 107 in a summer where everything old is new again. After all, any good CHR programmer knows it's 1998 all over again (Jonas Brothers are the new Hanson, "I Kissed a Girl" is the new "B****", etc. etc. etc.) We know how this movie ends... hopefully it's a much longer term success for the gang at Astral.

1) CKMX "pull the pin"??!! I'm sure Astral is stoked about a heavily automated AM classic country station pulling in a 3.1 share. It's the AM band!! Not much more you can do with it! I wonder what their overhead is versus their profit?
2) Any good CHR programmer knows that the movie never really "ends" and that CHR is cyclical. The CHR's that know this best are Z100, KIIS, Kiss Dallas, Kiss Boston, etc. Those stations have all stuck it out through some musically horrible years and today they all dominate their markets. Imagine where stations like Power 92 & 107 would be had they weathered the storm, refreshed their talent, imaging, etc? What about Z95 had they not thrown in the towel so early to The Beat?? Canadian broadcasters have been too impatient with the format here and some stations continue to suffer from pulling the pin far too early like 107 in Calgary and 95 Vancouver.

1) CKMX is down 10k listeners year-over-year. If I was Astral, I'd be questioning why I couldn't be pulling down a 7.9 like CHQR... and the answer is format. Regardless if it's automated, there are still bills to pay, and with a steadily dying audience (56k - 48k - 46k - 51k - 46k from S2 07 to S2 0, I can't help but think that some of CHQR's 125,000 listeners are ripe for the picking. News Talk doesn't have to be expensive if Astral was smart about it.
2) I agree that CHR is cyclical, and I think The Peak and Q107 have been huge mistakes for 107.3. That said, CHR post 9/11 was beyond brutal and weathering the storm would have likely results even worse than The Peak and Q.
As an aside, I think the reason for CHR finding new life in recent months (the last 12-1 is based solely on the music turning a corner. America seems to have rediscovered its muse, and as a result we are finally emerging from the doldrums after a tragedy. Some day, someone will write a great book on how pop culture and everything that makes it up (TV, Radio, Movies, Music, Books) was impacted by 9/11. I think there's a story to be told there...
I'm with Caller_9 about Astral being stoked about the performace of a heavily automated AM with more than a 3 share. Outside of maybe the power bill and 2 or 3 low salaries,It's not costing them much at all to run it. Probably a good return on a small investment. Yes, they could go talk. And it can be very expensive. But there are already a couple of talkers in town and only so many informercials. Prolley more trouble than it's worth, really.
Rawlco tanking in Edmonton and Calgary is great news in my opinion. A company that makes the majority of their on air talent do upwards of 90 hours (sometimes more) of voice tracking a week on different stations all the f over the place, doesn't know how to make great live radio, and it shows.
Keep VTing and raking in the Saskatchewan buck. Try it in actual radio markets, and you're f***ed.
Calgary ratings generate 11 comments. Whining and bitching about a kid at the Bull in S'toon provokes 85 responses. Small wonder our industry is going to hell.

You sound as if you're surprised. It's just another day at the office for PSR!

I think they are in trouble in Saskatchewan too, With new stations in Regina and Saskatoon it will be interesting to watch what happens in the next medium market book, I believe it starts in September. If they start to drop in Regina and Saskatoon it will put a lot of stress to keep things going everywhere. At the end of the day, they only have so much money to throw away...
Has anyone else heard the rumour that they have been sold to CTV/CHUM? It kind of reminds me of the Craig’s... Expand like crazy, get into trouble and sell to the big corporate company to bail themselves out.
