For those with high-definition radio receivers, there are now five more radio station alternatives on the Seattle airwaves.
Entercom Seattle said that it launched five new high-definition radio channels this week, ranging in programming from all-comedy to blues. High-definition, or HD radio, allows a broadcaster to send another signal in addition to its existing, over-the-air signal that's received by traditional AM and FM receivers. A special HD receiver is required to receive the high-definition radio signals, which have better, CD-like quality.
Radio stations say the better sound quality of HD radio will help them compete with satellite radio, which gives consumers clear sound and a wide range of stations for a monthly subscription fee and the cost of satellite receivers. HD radio is free once a receiver is purchased.
Entercom's five new HD channels include live rock, on FM frequency 99.9HD2; roots music and blues on 103.7HD2; world music on 107.7HD2; all-comedy on 100.7HD2; and urban adult contemporary on 97.3HD2.
Many Seattle radio stations, including public radio stations such as Tacoma's KPLU, are already broadcasting second, high-definition signals.
